Once again, another computer problem thread

I came home this weekend for the Thanksgiving break and I wanted to take my computer home so that I could work on my homework. If it helps we’re running Novel at school. Everything worked fine at school.

I plug the bad boy in at home turn everything on, and it stops booting half way through. I tried it a couple times to no avail. I went through command by command (option 5 on the win 98 start up menu) and found out the computer would stop right after I pushed Y for msmouse.vxd. I reinstalled msmouse.vxd but that didn’t seem to fix it. I’m at a loss as to what to do because everything worked fine at school. For what its worth, I can get in to safe mode fine.

So any ideas? If it helps I have an HP with win98 and Novel for the school network.

Also, if it comes down to it, can I buy Win98 (I think we lost the CD’s in the move to Ohio.) and install over the current copy without losing my data? I have alot of programs on there for my computer science classes and alot of my other classes. Any help would be great. Thanks!

I would just boot to dos & type: scanreg /restore & select an earlier registry & hope for the best.

Thanks for the idea Handy but still no dice. Does anyone know if I’d lose my data if I try and install ME over 98? How would I go about doing this? I’m getting desperate :frowning:

I’m guessing that your problem doesn’t have to do with that msmouse file. More likely there is a command after it that connects with the network. Since you have no network at home, it hangs up trying to connect. You may be able to wait it out, but, if not, it may work just fine when you get back to school. Have you tried Safe Mode? If you can boot there, check out your system files – it will probably be a Novell command that’s causing the trouble.

If you reinstall Win98, it will only overwrite your Windows directory (if that – depends on the settings). You shouldn’t lose data.

If your computer can handle it, you may want to use XP instead.

What should I be looking for in the system files? And what should be looking for in the system.ini file? I have no problem getting into safe mode. My computer should handle XP, but I have ME so I’ll probably go with that. I also have Redhat that I could put on the D drive. Could I run Visual studio from Redhat? I have to use visual studio for my classes plus I don’t have alot of time to learn redhat, it’s kind of a winter break thing I was going to try.

We do have a network at home though. Just a Linksys hub connecting the cable modems. But I tried booting both connected and not connected to the network.

I tried to put ME on top of W98 & with 8 tries I finally gave up & had to reformat & put Me on.

If you can get in safe mode you can still use some of your programs. also click START then H & read around about ‘only boots in safe mode’ for more hints. I also run:SFC (system file cheker) but without the cd you won’t be able to restore any files it wants.

Just as a test try pulling the network card out and see if the system boots.
