once again, I'm missing the fucking joke

I’ve tried so hard during my past year or so on the boards to narrow down my ‘hot buttons’. It used to be that a lot of things got in my craw, but I decided to just let them go. I’ve tried.

But I still cannot understand - after reading thousands of threads here, from hundreds of intelligent, compassionate posters - how violent, forcible, humiliating rape is funny.

I can POSSIBLY see how in some situations, people may find it JUSTIFIED (although I never would), or how you may not feel SYMPATHY for say, a child killer being raped. But the above quote is from a thread about a man who cut down trees, violating an environmental law.

Rape was suggested as a suitable punishment.

And I guess that’s funny.

I’m hoping someone will explain the joke.

Link?

Well, it’s not really pertinent, but here’s the thread that triggered my thoughts and included Diogenes’ quote:

May Rabid Squirrels Climb Up This Man’s Ass

Humor can be a defense mechanism, hence morbid humor. It also involves sex, the butt and frontier justice, a potent combination…

The actual thought of anal rape is repugnant; humor defelects the repugnancy.

People also tend to exaggerate in terms of punishment or conflict…many people who say “fry the bastard” wouldn’t have the cojones to pull the lever.

People on message boards tend to voice more extreme opinions than in person…

Oh yeah, instead of anal rape, I’d like to see the guy have to plant trees for a while…a few days of that would put more hurt on him than a poke in the ass…

It’s funny, because when people suggest it, they don’t think of the actual event or physical and emotional damage that’s done. They think of the cute little shot at the end of Mallrats where you see Ben Afflek’s character’s hands holding the prison bars and another man’s hands overlap them. They think the concept of a prissy-ass pain in the ass dipshit from accounting getting caught in the middle of nowhere and being helped out by Big Bubbha and his other overall wearing hillbilly brethren funny because of that imagery. I’m pretty sure if anyone of these people saw an even life-like portrayal of rape, they’d stop with all the jokes.

Then again, maybe not. As long as you don’t think of the violent stuff, anything is funny.

Look at the increasing number or laugh out loud dead baby jokes (and don’t tell me you haven’t giggled or even told some yourself because, well…they’re fucking funny).

I HAVE laughed at dead baby jokes, but I guess I can’t get past the fact tha prison rape is a serious issue, and it is violent and humiliating and repugnant and I can’t shake that from my head long enough to find it a suitable treatment for someone who cut down trees.

Count me as someone who missed the dead baby humor fad. Please, entertain us with the laugh riot that is dead children.

I have noticed that when the suggestion of prison rape is (most often) brought up it involves men… men who have used their superior strength and size to perpetrate heinous crimes against women and children.

The horror that we experience when we hear of women and children being forcibly violated makes us all very angry and as is our nature, we often think or wish that the perpetrator should be forced to experience a horror similar the that they have inflicted on others. We would like to see them rendered powerless and to suffer a never ending cycle of humiliation and pain.

It is perhaps fitting that besides incarceration, their punishment will also involve a close relationship with a large man named “Bubba”.

I think we laugh because it’s a reaction to a very abhorent subject and it makes many people really uncomfortable

A guy who broke some environmental laws by cutting down trees doesn’t seem to be worthy of such a punishment but then again, some of those tree huggers can be pretty passionate about protecting their little shrubs just as I am protective of my own.

Of course, my own are my wife and children.

Reacting that violently to someone who cut down a tree might mean a little perspective check is in order.

Prison rape is not funny. Rape is not funny. Perpetuating acts of violence against another person is not funny. Wise the hell up.

If you’re in prison, then obviously you didn’t follow the rules. Rape is part of the punishment I guess. But no, it’s not funny.

No, rape is not part of the punishment. Being in prison is the punishment. You should not be subjected to cruel and unusual treatment while in prison.

Good Lord. I hope if you believe this, and are as passive about it as you apper in your post, that you have no notion whatsoever that where you live is a just, humane, or reasonable society. At all. Whatsoever.

The notion that being forceably raped is “just part of prison life”, irrespective of the fact that those that are typically raped are the smaller, weaker, younger inmates, and the ones that rape are typically the larger, meaner, more preditory inmates - the ones that most likely perpitrated the more henous crimes - including rape - outside of prision, is totally apalling.

It’s not funny. It’s not a joke. Disgusting.

As an aside, I’m guessing that people that think that rape is a laugh-a-minute have never, themselves, been raped.

Just a WAG.

All this talk of prison rape like it’s just what happens when you go to prison got me thinking. Why don’t prisons do more to stop it? Seems like it could only occur if a blind eye is turned…

The rape scene in American History X comes to mind. Anyone who thinks that’s funny has been exposed to too much violence and needs to be deprogrammed. Seriously.

If something’s funny to you then it’s funny to you, period.

You may argue that it’s inappropriate to joke about a serious matter but I don’t see how you can tell someone to stop finding something funny.

I don’t think dead baby jokes are funny. I’m not going to, however, tell you to stop finding them funny.

Well, then again, you shouldn’t be in prison in the first place.

It IS funny when it happens to a rapist or a child molestor or a murderer. Why the hell should I feel sorry for them? I’m not making a blanket statement about all rape or even all homosexual rape. I’ve had very good friends who were victims of both. I despise rape, that’s why I think it’s fitting for them to receive the same brutality that they inflicted on others. Plenty of people here support the death penalty but they don’t get pitted for it. Isn’t killing them worse?

I’m sooooooooo impressed with your sensitivity towards those poor rape victims in prison. Now kindly bite my ass.

Oh yeah, prison rape is a laugh riot.

The hell it isn’t. Ask any guy what they would fear the most about prison. It isn’t the food. The fear of “Bubba” is probably one of the single most powerful deterrents for comitting crimes. If that threat was removed, prison would suddenly become a lot less scary place.
