Reality check. The word pho does not match the pronunciation of foe. It’s closer to faw, or to my ear a cross between faw and fu (with a short u as in the first two letters of fu*k).

A Hmong co-worker tried and tried to get me to pronounce it right. As long as I can order it, I’m happy. If they pretend to misunderstand me, I’ll just get a bahn mi instead.
Right. I cringe when I hear the “foe” pronunciation. “Fuh”, with the “u” of “tug”, is what I say. It’s not exactly correct but closer than “foe”.
There’s a Vietnamese restaurant called “Pho Kim Long” whose name I found quite amusing when I learned the correct pronunciation of “pho”.
I say it like they say it in the restaurant. ‘FUH’
As long as it works. Just wanted to let readers know that the staff of the restaurant cringes when they hear it pronounced “foe”.
I had a Vietnamese friend who taught me the correct way to pronounce the name “”Ng”.
Went into a new patient room and introduced myself to a Ms. Ng pronouncing it that way … to be corrected … with some annoyance … that here it is said “Ing”.
The staff expects it to said “foe” here I think.
