One for the brainiacs.

Here’s a message that we transmitted into space in 2001, in the hopes that something, somewhere will pick it up. How many of the slides can you decipher?

I got to p6 pretty easily. Although I’m pretty sure I know what p6 is about, I’m struggling to recognise the constants on the slide.

Can you do any better?

Why were we sending needepoint patterns into space?
Don’t aliens have their own?

Yes, they do.

Hey, I remember p.23! I used to play that one in the arcades all the time.

Page one appears to be a list of prime numbers. Two is addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

ETA: Oh, I see you got to p6. So the goal is p7?

According to the Dutil and Dumas Active SETI site, slide 6 refers to Chemical Elements.

Here is a PDF LINK to a document explaining all slides: PDF LINK

Yeah, I figured out p6. I’m on 7 now.

Page 21 is a map of Lombard Street in San Francisco

Page 11 is the solar system
I think page 12 has to do with the distance between the Earth and the Sun.
Page 15 is p0rn.
Page 17 look like organic chemistry
Page 18 appears to be DNA
Pages 19 and 20 are maps of the earth from a polar projection

Other than that I got nuthin.

So some alien figures this out & sends a message back in this cryptic code. I wonder how long it would take US to figure out what the response said…

I started a thread a long while back in which I set about deciphering the pages without reading any of the accompanying text or explanation, and without sitting back and guessing or just relying on known patterns such as saying “ah!, well, those are obviously planets…”

The thread is gone now, but I got more than halfway through before I sort of lost interest and stopped.
It was surprisingly straightforward, and I would say that any intelligent being with a basic grasp of maths and science should be able to make sense of it.
