"One of Ours" by Willa Cather: a cheapskate's experience

I like to listen to audio books in the car. I get a lot of them from LibriVox,* because they’re free, because they’re classics, and because I think I’m doing a public service by posting reviews of them at goodreads when I’m done.

I love Willa Cather. So I’m listening to*** One of Ours***, and while the voice is fine, the guy’s mispronunciations are seizure-inducing.

He pronounces *Cather *(repeated once a chapter) with a voiced ‘th’, like it rhymes with rather!
*Effeminate *became effemut.
The world famous Savoy hotel became SAY-voy.
*Versailles *is pronounced ver-SAY.
Tow-headed (tow-headed!) pronounced so *tow *rhymes with *now *: Tau-headed.
*Foliage *became FOYL-udge. I think that might be my favorite.
There are more I can’t think of right now. It’s hard being a skinflint who likes audio books.

*Librivox actually has a lot of good readers, and several books that are as good as professional level readings.
