I just discovered that a story of mine, “Occurrance at Arroyo de Buho Bridge,” has received an honorable mention in Gardner Dozois’s “Year’s Best Science Fiction.”
I’ve been writing and selling science fiction for twenty years now, but this is the first time I’ve made Gardner’s list. He also mentioned my name in his commentary about the webzine it appeared in (Strange Horizons).
Ice Wolf* – that’s an interesting story. I was at a science fiction convention with Charlie Ryan of Aboriginal SF. He brought along a slushpile story that was an obvious retelling of “Occurrance at Owl Creek Bridge” (it was possible the author had never heard of the original). Later, on a panel, Charlie mentioned the story. I asked him what someone would have to do to sell him a story like that. Charlie said, “Do it well.”
I took that as a challenge. The best idea to me was to put Bierce in that position, which fit in with his disappearance. I did some research and discovered other ways to match the situation with Bierce’s life.
Charlie didn’t buy it, but Strange Horizons did.
*Like your handle, since one of my published stories was titled “The Icewolf Rider.”
A hearty toast of congratulations with your favorite beverage, RealityChuck.
Loved the story, particularly since it flows so nicely from what is known about Bierce’s character and is centered around the Owl Creek Bridge story, one of the most disturbing I’ve ever read.
Now, of course, I’ll have to spend hours in SF shops and online hunting down ALL your work. You wouldn’t happen to have a handly list about you somewhere, would you?
The next time Westercon comes to Portland I hope you’ll be the GOH…
