One Person, Location Suddenly Known To All

Here’s a possibly interesting mental exercise. The premise: a certain person (male or female, of any nationality or ethnicity) suddenly gains an unusual ability. This event can happen at any point in this person’s life, but does not happen upon birth. Also for the purposes of this discussion, the event (for the rest of the world) happens the moment you finish reading this sentence.

What happens? Simultaneously, every single person living on this planet (only humans, no other species) becomes aware of the “gifted” person’s (hereafter referred to as Known Person) existence and location, no matter where Known Person may be or may travel to. This phenomenon continues until the end of Known Person’s life, however that may come about. Further, this knowledge is not exact: while any person, when asked, can point in the more-or-less exact direction of Known Person, distance is only vague - from “Not too far away” to “Thousands of miles away.” If Known Person is on the opposite side of the planet from the person being asked, the person will point at the ground in an “as-the-crow-flies” indication of Known Person’s location (in effect, pointing straight at Known Person, as opposed to pointing in a compass direction). Of course, no one will ask anyone else where Known Person is, as everyone already knows, and will continue to know, again, for the rest of Known Person’s life.

Initially, most of the world will know nothing about Known Person, save for the people already in his or her life. Even after any investigation by any type of organization, no one will know anything more than existence, direction, and a general sense of distance, and what is publicly reported by those organizations or other persons. No one will know, for instance, what Known Person is doing or saying, exactly where Known Person is (on the third floor of a hotel or in a 1950s-style bomb shelter), Known Person’s emotional state or health conditions, who Known Person is with, what may be or is happening to Known Person, or any other specific details of Known Person’s existence (other than that Known Person exists and is in that direction, roughly X distance away).

Hopefully that sets up the conditions such that all of you Dopers understand what I’m trying to convey. If not, please ask for clarification, and I’ll try not to “cheat” by adding wrinkles that change the fundamental nature of the original premise.

Now to the discussion. What happens next? How does the world react to this sudden and permanent knowledge? How do governments react? Religions? Scientists? General populations of any and every nation? How would you react?

I of course have my own ideas and notions, but I’m quite curious to hear what all of you will have to say. Begin!

Of what value is this person to me beyond always knowing his/her location?

If you don’t already know Known Person, then of course he or she means nothing to you immediately before the event happens. After, you may think something’s wrong with you, hallucinating something that couldn’t possibly happen. That is, until you discover that this is happening to everyone else around you (and at the beginning, no one knows that everyone else knows the same thing). Eventually, the knowledge will spread that this is a world-wide phenomenon. Given such a unique event whose full magnitude unfolds over an unspecified period of time (variable due to the nature of the world’s reaction), how valuable does Known Person become to you? What might Known Person represent? Is this good, or is it bad?

I’m trying not to lead your response, so forgive me if I haven’t answered your question well enough (or if I failed and planted suggestions in your head).

Is this a Jesus version of Find Waldo?

Not meant to be, but you’ve certainly hit on one of my ideas of what might happen. Some percentage of the world may well see this as the Second Coming, despite Known Person being quite unextraordinary, failing to perform miracles, and suchlike. What Known Person does about this sudden “gift” is also part of the discussion. What would you do if you became Known Person?

A new sport known as “kipping” will arise around him. It is a form of orienteering based on knowledge of the location of the Known Person (henceforth referred to as “Kip”), with the complication that your compass point may at any time decide to make a beer run. X-treme Kipping will further involve kidnapping Kip and placing him in a labyrinth that requires both kipping and parkour to navigate.

Does everyone know that they are correct in their knowledge. Or do we only have a feeling KP is “there” but would have to verify it? If I wasn’t sure I knew something true my first reaction would be that something was wrong with my mind. “Why do I think this person I don’t even know is that way?” I’m not even sure what it would take for me to start to begin to verify my feelings were correct.

Does everyone instantly know that everyone else knows where KP is? That would seem much more 'magical" to me than we all happened to know where KP was which I might attribute to some kind device what transmitted direct to our brains.

And “WHY ARE YOU ALL STARING AT ME?” – KP

At first, everyone gains this new knowledge in the same way: they’re instantly aware that an unknown person is located in that direction, about X distance away. No one knows why they have this sudden knowledge of this particular person, or that anyone else does, let alone everyone else. To the best of my personal knowledge, nothing like this has occurred in the real world, thus the best explanation may well be “magic,” although to what end is unknown.

It would likely happen in thousands of different ways around the globe, but this new knowledge would sooner or later be followed up by variations on “It’s not just me, it’s everyone!” as people began reacting and interacting with others in their immediate vicinity. Eventually, the whole world will realize it’s happening to the whole world.

And here is one of the things that I believe would likely happen: that this one person becomes known to the whole world in such a unique way would elevate that person’s importance to the world, regardless of how unimportant and average and ordinary Known Person actually is. People would come up with reasons why this happened/is happening. Is this person Christ in His Second Coming? Is it the Anti-Christ? Is this person using some kind of new technology? Is this person the precursor to an alien invasion? And so on and so forth.

Obviously, this whole idea is fiction, but I am trying to extrapolate how the real world might react to such an event.

Given my paranoid tendencies, I would assume that this person would very soon be in “protective custody” while top men research exactly what it is that is causing everybody to know where he is, and whether or not it’s possible to transfer this “beacon” aspect to another person whose location is currently unknown.

Yet another of my possibilities, but go a step further. That sounds like what the US government might do, but what about other governments? China? The Middle East? North Korea?

And now you’ve given me a mental image of “Kip” being placed into a large wooden crate, the crate being nailed shut, and the same wizened old man slowly pushing the crate deep into the vast, shadowy recesses of a giant warehouse full of thousands of stacks of similar crates. Can even Kip’s new power allow potential rescuers to find him? Stay tuned! <cue local used car dealership commercial>
