One-Syllable Challenge II: Best Vacation?

Glad to see the first One-Syllable Challenge went over so well. Time to step it up: Describe the best vacation you’ve ever taken.

This will probably be a bit tougher (going to be tricky to describe many locations, I’m thinking). Enjoy!

Mom, my three 'bros and I went on a raft down a long, long stream that runs through a large, “Grand” rift in the earth that goes through a few U.S. states out west. It was a big raft, but there was us, two guides, plus twelve more folks, so it was kind of packed. It took eight days to drift from the start 'til we got to Lake Mead. The stream was so cold, but that was fine 'cause the days were so hot. We would stop and get off the raft and hike to cliffs where you could look down and say “Wow! They look so small from here!”. Or we would hike to small streams that run to the big stream. They were nice and warm, so we could swim in those and not say “Brrrrr!! That’s too cold!”. One day we hiked to a cliff where we could jump from high, high up and land in the cold stream. My one bro stood at the edge, but would not jump. What a wuss. I pushed him off. He was pissed at me. Such a nice place. The hole does not look near the same from the base as it does from the rim.

And oh!, the meals they served us! No place to go buy food for a long, long way, so we were scared of how bad the food we would eat might be. No fear, the men who ran the trip could cook like that “Bam!” guy. Very, very good eats. If we did not sweat all day long, I’d have gained ten pounds that week.

When we were done on the raft, we went to the Town of Sin to play games and try to win cash. We went to the Hard Rock (Nice place! They play cool tunes all day and all night. I’m used to the A.C. ones – not as nice) and I spent a long time at a card game where you want to get a “ten” and an “ace”. I won a lot of cash, but some bad guy or gal snuck in my room and took my dough…Grrrrr! That part was no fun, but as a whole, the trip rocked.

Though I missed my wife very much (we had been a pair less than a year at the time), it was still so much fun. Years from now, I would love to do it one more time, this time with my wife when we have kids of our own to take.

This will not be too tough for me since I go to the same place each year (Cape May) with the same folks (Pat, Don, Anne, Doug, Kate, and Dave). We rent a house near the beach. My sis and I go to the beach all day and soak up the sun and read and nap. When we have dined, we will all go take a walk and watch the sun set then go get ice cream cones. We like to play the golf with the short clubs too. We might go up the coast to the town where they have rides that go up high and swing you around fast. I have fun each year. I can’t wait for the month after the month after June so I can go!

My most neat trip took me far far on a plane. Lots of hours on plane. Kay and I and group went to lots of places. We saw place where two big big seas meet. We saw birds which are black and white. We saw the “Big Hole”, where they dug for rocks which are worth a lot in rings for brides. We saw the falls which are named for the smoke that makes big noise, and also for a dead queen. We flew in small planes. We saw big cats with spots and a big cat with a mane. We saw beasts with long necks. We saw lots of birds, some of which look like leafs and like to eat bees. We saw “horse” with black and white stripes. We flew back on small plane, then on big plane, then on big big plane, across big, big sea. It took lots of hours. Can you guess where we were?

Two falls back, my wife and I went to the Land of the Mouse, in the State Where the Sun Shines Much of the Time™. It was her first time, my tenth or so (but my first with her).

From here on, the names of the rides will be changed so as to keep to the rules of this game.

We rode Mount Space, Mount Splash, The Tall Inn of Fear at Dusk (based on an old TV show from back in The Day), Ghost House, Sea of Sea-Thieves, Star Tours (no need to change that!) and the rest of the big ones, as well as most of the small ones.

My wife loved the sights and sounds and smells, and the World as a whole. At times, I think it was too much for her. She cried tears of glee a time or two, and so did I. When The Mouse sang a song and turned the key at 9:00 to let us in to his realm, she cried then, too. At times she felt like Walt built the place just for me and her. Walt’s “cast,” as they are called, were all so nice.

Her best parts of the trip are when we met Walt’s “peeps” and got them to sign their names. She loved it when we met The Mouse, his babe, his pal the duck, and so on; and also when we met the gang from the Woods - you know, that Pooh guy, and his pal the pig and his pal the ass. And, she met lots of peeps from more shows & flicks.

My best parts were Mount Space (I’ve loved that ride since I was a wee lad) and the shows with sparks of fire in the sky (if you know what I mean).

We went last year, too, and we had just as much fun as we did the first time. But, our first trip to Walt’s World will be our best, since it was the first for both of us.

Can’t wait to go back!

Africa?
[/Not obeying the one-syllable rule]

Yes. Since I wrote that, I thought of two or so more things I should add. We rode on a train for a few days. Slept and ate on the train as well. I saw big grey beasts with long trunks. I also saw pigs with warts and tusks. At camp we had a light with globes made from eggs from a big big bird. At dawn we got up to go drive and see lots of types of beasts. We also did this at dusk. I saw more types of beasts than I can think of ways to name with words of nor more than one part.

Eureka, hon, you may want to say “we did this too” instead of “we also did this?”

A long time past, I flew to the land of bier and wurst. In the south we saw lots of sights; home of mad king with a swan theme, beer hall of much fame, and more. We went to old forts and took walks on town walls of old. We went south and east to a town of salt. I did not like the time in France, but it was short. On the way home, we saw the graves of Old Blood and Guts and his men - thank you all.

I live near New York, New York. I can get there on the bus that costs three bucks one way. I love to see folks on stage that sing and dance, like in CATS and MAME and FAME and STOMP and BLAST and KING AND I and A-Q and lots more. I go to the TKTS (“ticks”) booth in Times Square and see shows for half price or less. Since I live so close to New York, New York I do not have to pay for a room to stay in. I just take the same bus back to my two rooms every night.

I am very smart and have good luck to live where I do. Some folks pay big bucks to vist New York New York once a year.

Ah Shit :smack:

Tee Hee! Ok - I will play! I, too, have two trips to talk to you about.

For Spring Break my last year in high school, a group of us went to Greece for a week! We flew on two planes (I was mad that we did not stop in France on the way there) for lots of hours - ten and four to cross The Pond. Our room gave us a view of a cool park with old stuff in it. We went to the High Town with the big stone thing that is quite well known. One day, we drove north to the old place where a gal would tell what would be - “build a wall of wood” is well known. We saw lots and lots of old old things all week long. We went on a cruise to three bits of land in the sea. That was great! But I had never seen all those dogs and cats with no homes! It made me sad. One day, we drove west to see where the games we see each for years were played for the first time. One of our group ran up and down the big field. The rest of sat where the “king” would have been! I took lots and lots of pics - more than twelve rolls of film! I paid lots of cash to have those made into pics, but it was well worth it.

For our trip the day we were wed, “Drew” and I went on a cruise to the sea south of us. We were on the ship for a whole week! We got off the boat three times - once to play with rays that can sting, once to see an old town on the east coast of the realm south of us, and once in the States - in the town where they have that “Fat” day of the week in the spring (we found the house of Anne Rice while we were there). We would like to see all of these places once more some day. The food on the ship was so good - and we could eat as much as we wished, at all hours of the day. They would have brought it to our room, too! We slept a lot that week - I swear!! We did not want to get off of that boat and go home. But we did - we had gifts to open when we got home! Plus, to stay on the boat, we would have had to get jobs, and their pay sucks.

(I like this game!)

[grumbling]
There ought to be a rule. No word with fewer than five letters counts as having plural syllables. I then would be allowed to use also and many(which I caught myself using several times).

Awww, crap! You caught me, Avarie537. Damn! Nailed with a bad word in my own game… :stuck_out_tongue:

Hal, that was the best part!!

My mom, dad, bro and I drove a long way south and west of our home. We saw sand and rocks, some guys and gals with more dark skin* than mine; they were nice folks.

We saw tall hills with snow on top and the brakes in our van were not so fine when we went down those hills. We saw fields of that spice that is in the red sauce poured on strips of wheat and eggs which get hot and soft in wet stuff on the stove. It smelled like it would taste great.

We saw wine land and lots and lots of vines with grapes on them. Then we saw the sea on the west side of the coast. It was cold when we were there, and we had to buy warm shirts and pants… we had just brought shorts to wear!

We slept at my mom’s friend’s house where I saw a bug type thing with a big sting on the end of a tail. It was on the ground and had six legs. The big thing was half a foot long! We wore our shoes to bed that night.

We drove through a lot of states in less than two weeks. I was very young and I did not have a choice to go.

I’ll post next time with the tale of my worst time ever on break.

*This was my first experience with native americans as a young child.

I was just a teen. Mom & Dad & kid Bro and I drove to Keys. We were there a week. We slept in tents not far from the beach. There was lots of sun and warmth. We swam a lot. We saw the sights in Key West. We went on the Conch Train. We got a bit burnt by the sun, but not too bad. I saw a sea horse, and sting rays, and lots of fish. I kissed a cute blond guy, too! What a fun time we had.

When I was six, we went to Spain. First we went to France. Some kin from there came with us. We stayed in a wee town on the sea. Each day we would walk to the beach. A man would come down the beach; he sold those nuts that fall from palm trees, all cut in half for you to eat. We ate the nut meat and used the shells to dig holes in the sand. This holds your mind for hours on end, if you’re six. And if you get bored with holes, you can build a house out of sand, or splash your kin with salt water! And there were kids to play with.

Once my sis and other kin our age and I all went to the store and spent all our cash on sweets. Boy, were the old folk mad! They were so cross; they yelled at us that we had to stay in the house for the next day and not go to the beach. So we watched the boob tube, read, and played games all day… not as hard on us as they had hoped it would be.

Ah, youth!

I could not tell about my job this way (short words), but so what!

Well, a year or two back I flew down south. I was still in the land where I was born, but not in a state. Does that make sense? I was not in the same land as the big town of San Juan, but to the west a bit, a small place. I saw palm trees, like wow! And fish too–bright green and blue ones in the warm sea. I was glad I saw less than one sharks, but I did see an large eel! (I am proud of this fact.)

This place has lots of past…there are forts, cane mills, old homes where rich guys lived with their slaves, that sort of thing. I was told that sea thieves once lived there too…like Black Beard and Blue Beard. This is not a lie. Too bad I did not find all the loot they must have hid in the ground!

Four years back, I went to the land mass to the east of us here in the states. I spent three weeks with my friend in the south of France, and then I got on a bus and went to lots of cool spots.
The Swiss Alps were great, though there was some rain when I was there. Then I went to the land where my dad’s dad’s dad came from. There I drank much bier and saw a lot of nice kirks. Next, I was off to Czech, the land where Prague is. This was the best! Prague is great! More good beer!
Then I was off to the town which at one time had an east side and a west side, but then the wall came down. I took a tour on a boat and saw a lot of cranes which work to build the town fresh and new.
My last stop was the town where one of the mods on this board lives. I rode a bike here and there, saw some cool art, and then there was the shop where one can buy stuff that one can not buy in a shop in the states. I spent some time in that shop and went back to my room to watch the boob tube and eat good brown sweet stuff with nuts in it. (eww, hope you know what I mean!)
I can’t wait to go back to all of those spots! Good beer, nice folk, cool things to see.

I took a plane to the place of Brits, then to France, then rode a fast train to the 'Dam. My hub made me run much too fast through all these and I did not see all I wished, but he is my ex now. The Brits were so nice! They helped you when you had a need with no fuss and the land was so green. France sucked (it smelled and folks were mean) and the guard ran us down to make us leave the dead folks place as it closed. Mean, French bitch made hub say the name of the town five times and then she showed us the right train to take. 'Dam was fun for my dumb hub but not for me since I do not smoke of the weed nor do I like to smoke such things. He liked the “shop” near our room. It was too strange to me to buy that stuff like it was some food and NOT a drug. It used up our days when we could have done more in the place of Brits. We had four days of sun there and walked to each cool place. I did the “Road” walk like all the folks do and signed my name on the walls. In each place, I drank beer not Coke since hub thought I would look too odd and I do not like beer. My hub was dumb but he is my ex now. We had eight days to see the sights but like I said, we had to RUN. I will plan the next trip if I go back. I did not see the stones… sigh.
