one thing that needs to be understood!

Atheists have to live with their actions!
We do not have the spiritual whitewash of forgivenness every sunday.
I for one, conduct myself accordingly.

Er…just so you know, non-atheists don’t go around thinking “It’s okay if I do X, Y and Z, because I’m going to Mass tomorrow and I’ll get forgiven.” Well, none that I know do, anyway.

Yes but you Do have the option of being forgiven every sunday don’t you?
that is a little different from us atheist buttheads!
I have met any number of good Xtians that conduct themselves as barracudas during the week, and then get “forgiven” on sunday and go back to their previous antics. I know a couple of jews with similar behavior.

Abandon religion and conduct yourself as a secular human!
or provide proof! faith is for the gullible!

Welcome to the SDMB, and thank you for posting your comment.
Please include a link to Cecil’s column if it’s on the straight dope web site.
To include a link, it can be as simple as including the web page location in your post (make sure there is a space before and after the text of the URL).

Cecil’s column can be found on-line at this link:
How do courts swear in atheists? (12-Jun-1981)

Okay http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_145.html
there it is is!

mwad - on the positive side, us atheists could do whatever we want as long as we would be sure no one will find out.

In any case, this is not the place to debate atheist morality. The correct location for that discussion would be our Great Debates forum. If you do want to discuss the penalties of perjury vs. the wrath of God, you could do so in this forum since it is related to the Straight Dope column.

I was commenting on Cecils column—how does that take us to this other forum?

Given that Shabbat is Friday sundown to Saturday sundown, that last is not too surprising :stuck_out_tongue:

That sounded vaguely antisemitic—
Certainly not my intent!
judaism is no more proveable than any of the others!
and quite frankly the old testament gawd was just plain mean!

We do require members to be over 13 years of age, mwad. And to act like it.

You might want to read the type of posts that are common in this forum, and heed Mr Winkelried’s comments. I fail to see how your comments were in any way a comment on Cecil’s column, except that his column mentions “atheists” and so do you.

I was posting as an atheist- living in a society that assumes they have a right to insert their stupid collective superstition into my government and way of life.I cannot even serve on a jury without being subject to their silliness!
Our government was formed as a secular government so that it could represent all people. we now have a president and an attorney general that are little more than superstitious fools.they are currently making war on a country that has no nukes and giving candy to one threatening to use nukes!
I consider my response a “straight dope” response to someone who wrote a column about what I have to live with.
I started this thread to share how some atheists feel about their superstitious brethren, and maybe help them understand how we feel. and to address Cecil’s column.
thus far I it has been suggested I go to another part of the forum (thereby no longer addressing Cecils column) and I have had my maturity called into question!
Live my 40 year life with stupid people making laws on how you live it and see how you come across!

Sorry about the double post

mwad, this forum is for discussion of the particulars of any of Cecil’s columns. A general discussion of the relative morality of atheists and religious people would, more typically, be a matter to take up in Great Debates (unless you are simply foaming at the mouth on the topic, in which case you might want to post a rant in The BBQ Pit).

While your original post may have been prompted by Cecil’s column, it does not appear to actually reply to any of the factual assertions made in that column–hence the question of which forum you intended for posting your views.

As to the question of age, I would guess that a combination of your firing off a rant in (what appears to be) the wrong forum, combined with your failure to do more than rant on your topic (i.e., without providing substantive arguments in support of your expressed ire), raised the question among some readers as to your age.

If you wander over to Great Debates and browse through the various religion- and faith-related threads, you will discover that you have many kindred spirits on this MB. However, you might want to look over what has already been posted on your topic and consider matching the level of discourse that those kindred spirits have provided. (Otherwise, feel free to visti the Pit and vent your spleen to your heart’s content.)

Welcome to the Straight Dope®. Enjoy your stay.

mwad, you can get to the message board home page by following this link. There you will see the list of different fora at the Straight Dope Message Board, and a description for what kind of post belongs in each.
If you’re not sure where to put a post, you can always ask in the “About This Message Board” forum.
And of course the suggestions given by the other people in this thread constitute good and sound advice.

Actually, I don’t. I have the option of being forgiven if I go to confession and repant my sins. If I keep doin’ 'em every week and expecting continual forgiveness, there’s no repentance there, yes?

I had always heard there wasn’t a quota.
the catholics just keep assigning penances and the subgroups that Martin Luther gave rise to don’t even require that. I’ve always thought of it as spiritual whitewash.
