Withen the last year or so I’ve discovered I have an affinety for onions, and while I don’t exactly take an onion, peel it, and then take big bites out of it like one would an apple, I’ve discovered that you can put them on or in a great many types of food (Along with Garlic).
So, I have to wonder…Are they any known ill effects from possibly eating onions too much (other then the fact people don’t want to kiss you)?
Excess in pretty well anything can be harmful, so I wouldn’t give you an unqualified “NO”, but in slightly-more-than-normal quantities of consumption, onions won’t damage anything beyond your social life.
I dearly love the aliums and have been known to consume quite a few. Have for many years, especially during Vidalia season. I’ve even eaten onion sandwiches. The only thing I’ve ever experienced is, um, a touch of gas from time to time. I’ve never heard of any other ill effects.
Roast onions all sweet and juicy with burnt outer skin - crispy fried onions all salty - sharp crunchy chopped spring onions - red onion marmalade melting in a sweet puddle - chopped shallots in french dressing - lovely oily fried onions slithering on a steak or hot dog - stir-fried onions all fragrant and coated with soy sauce - rich tangy onion soup…
Warm a pan on the stove. Throw in some real butter, not margarine. Add 4 or 5 slices of a good sweet onion such as a Walla Walla sweet or a vidalia. Cook until tender and well carmalized. Place between 2 slices of toast with mayo. I’ll occasionally add a fried egg and make it a breakfast sandwich.
