online gaming recommendations wanted

Hi

Having at last got round to setting up broadband my mind turns to online gaming.

I’m based in the UK (if that is relevant). And not young at all.

I’m interested in both fantasy and space type games.

Not able to spend all day every day playing but looking for something that can be fun without total commitment.

Looking for something pretty friendly - not infested with people who’ll give me grief like in some of may past limited forays into this area.

Any suggestions, experiences welcome.

Hi Tagos,

Have you considered World of Warcraft? It is a really well made massively multiplayer fantasy role-playing game

If you want I can send you a trial account(10 day free play), I play on a European server(darkmoon faire) on the alliance side(humans),

Send me a message if you want to try it out

Hi

Thanks for the reply and the offer. I must admit I haven’t considered it, not ever being a warcraft fan but i might well take you up on that offer.

Is it the sort of game where i’m going to spend the next month chopping wood and hiding from large rabbits?

Not really, there is a training ground where you have do some beginner quests, killing baby wolves or something, after that you go into low level area with quests with actual story lines

Each player level has several world zones where the monsters and challenges are of comparable difficulty

I really liked the second zone I played (westfall) where after finishing the main questline I got heralded as the savoir of west fall, there is a fun beginner’s dungeon(deadmines) there too
If you like player versus player combat, you can flag your self so other players can attack you, but you don’t have to

Each player level has several world zones where the monsters and challenges are of comparable difficulty

If you want to earn extra gold you can skin animals, mine iron or gather herbs to use with your leatherworking, blacksmith or alchemy skill, but if you don’t want to you can buy those on the in game auction house with gold you make from quests

Thanks for the info. Sounds a possibility.

City of Heroes/Villains is also a very good online game. I enjoy pretty much every aspect of it. Everything from character creation to soloing missions to tackling giant monsters with a group of people. I could ramble about the great times I have had with CoH, but everything I can say has already been said, and better, elsewhere on the board. Here is a thread with some pretty good info.

City of Heroes/Villains - Talk Me Into or Out Of It

Cheers. I look good in spandex.

I’ll throw in another recommendation for World of Warcraft. The game can be darned near anything you want it to, and they’ve made changes over the last year to make leveling much faster.

I play regularly with people of all ages. I’m 50, and I play with some teenagers and several friends in their 70s. Some are into big cooperative group play (a.k.a. raiding), some (like me) are mostly into solo PvE (player vs. environment), some are heavily into PvP (player vs. player). Some play on roleplaying realms, most on normal realms.

Within each category are many styles of play. If you’re a PvE solo player, for example, you can focus on leveling one character fast, or you can start ten characters with different race/class combinations and play what you’re in the mood for. You can mostly do quests or mostly just go out and kill stuff. You can focus on getting experience, gaining faction reputations, or do (sometimes silly) stuff for achievements. If you’re into game economics, you can play the auction house system or develop a set of crafting and/or gathering professions to try to make gold.

If you’re a sociable type, get into a big guild – there will be people online at all times of the day and night you can play with. If you’re not, don’t join a guild at all. Do what you want, when you want.

I’ve been playing for three years and there’s still a lot of stuff in the game I haven’t done.

Thanks. Sounds promising - not the experience I expected. Thought it would be more group and combat oriented.

Has anyone tried the Lord of the Rings game?

I’m still inclined to go for some kind of spaceflight one but Eve looks like it demands way too much commitment and I sort of hope for a cockpit experience.

That’s the thing about WoW. Get five people to describe it to you and it sounds like five different games. I have a friend in a raiding guild that has organized 10-man and 25-man raids just about every night. You have to commit to a minimum of 20 scheduled hours per week just to be a member. I, on the other hand, jump on when I feel like it. If a friend is on, sometimes we’ll group up. Most of the time, I just play solo.

My buddy told me the only real reason to play lord of the rings online was if you’re way into the LOTR universe, because in almost every aspect it paled in comparison to WoW. He’s a WOW fiend, though, so I dunno.

if you’re into Space sims I had a thread here that you should give a look see. got a few recommendations for space sims both online and offline, online being mostly focused around Evochron Legends and Allegiance, both fo which are linked in that thread (and I’m to lazy to go get you the links, it’s a short thread  )

Do you have a console?

Thanks. I’ve dabbled with Evochron but not online. Looking for a bigger more persistent world.

I’ve signed up for the trial of LOTRO as I’m a big LOTR fan and the thought of ‘seeing’ Middle Earth was just too tempting. After signing up I found that the download was going to take a ridiculously long time so I’ve ordered a cheap set-up from amazon.

WoW sounds great too but I just have no feel at all for the universe.

Thinking of signing up for the Jumpgate Evolution beta for my outer space fix.

Thanks for all the advice and links Dopers. Much appreciated.

No. PC.

Age of Empires 3 is good online The problem, though, is that it’s too much like a cookbook, with what to build, when to build it all written in stone.

Never really got into that series. So many great games, so little time.

I’ve just started Warhammer online to join the SO & I’m liking it. I’ve heard the Healers on WH is better than most of the other mmo’s, so we’ll see.

I also have a subscription to LotRO. I got in on the lifetime membership. It’s a nice break from WoW, in which I also play.

Final Fantasy Online is where I find the most “walk-in-grouping” for the bigger quests. I like it for the most part, but the controls, imo, are a pain in the arse to master.

I have been playing LOTRO since May of 2007. I think it is superior to WoW in almost every respect. If you happen to decide to play on Meneldor, let me know and I would be happy to get you set up.

Hi

Thanks. what sort of server is it? (I’m UK based BTW). I was thinking about one of the Roleplaying ones on the assumption that there would be less stupid kids speaking leet on it but I’m very open to having my mind changed especially if there is a band of worthy adventurers willing to help out a novice elf hunter.
