Online learning (college-level) resource recommendations

I really miss teaching, and I’d like to pick up an adjunct teaching position at a local college. I know a lot has changed in online education since the last time I taught a college course almost a decade ago, and many of these courses are taught partially or entirely online these days. Before going in for interviews, I’d like to have an understanding of the current state-of-the-art for course planning, forums, chats, course materials, tests & quizzes, grade-keeping, and so forth.

Any recommendations on books (or other reading materials) that could give me a good overview on the current state of the technology from the instructor’s point of view?

I can tell you that my wife had different experiences in each course when she got her Masters a few years ago. Some of the courses had all the material available on-line, including chat rooms, and on-line progress reporting. Others required those old-timey book things, mailing in work, and instructors who couldn’t use email very well.
