I know iTunes exists, but what I’m looking for is a subscription, download-all-you-want site with a decent selection. Do these exist?
I should have clarified. What I meant was a site with a monthly/yearly fee and unlimited d/ls.
What happen to live in Canada would you? because of the CD tax and a court ruling p2p downloads (but not uploads) in Canada are legal.
Nope, USA. I think in the long run, if I moved to Canada though, it would probably be more cost-effective.
AFAIK, there are no services that let you download all you want. If you want to just listen to tracks on your computer, for $10 a month you can stream as much of Rhapsody or Napster catalog as you want. Rhapsody offers $0.79/track burns for subscribers. Napster lets you download songs for $0.99/track or $9.95/album for burning, playing on your computer, or transfering to a portable device.
Been thinking about biting the ice cube and moving there myself since I heard about that.
Kazaa isn’t illegal.
OK, but downloading copyrighted music using Kazaa (or the many similar programs) is. At least in the U.S. Yes, there are some legal uses for Kazaa, but I don’t think they’re very popular, and they’re not what the OP seemed to be referring to. I feel that saying Kazaa isn’t illegal is true, but it’s a technicality.
EMusic used to have unlimited downloading for a monthly fee, but that changed a few months back, I believe due to licensing restrictions. The plans they now offer are:
EMusic Basic: $9.99 per month/40 song downloads
EMusic Plus: $14.99 per month/65 song downloads
EMusic Premium: $19.99 per month/90 song downloads
They have a good catalog, but are missing a lot of stuff. I liked them for finding lesser-known artists/tracks. They offer a trial subscription, so check it out and see if you like it.
