Only Murders in the Building

That note seemed to only be for the benefit of the viewers. If she planted it, it could have been so that the security cameras (if any) captured her pulling it from the door and reading it. But if the security cameras could capture that, it would also capture who placed the note there in the first place.

If her intention was simply to have the note so she could tell the police that she saw it pinned to the door, then there was no need to pin it to the door, or have a shocked/concerned look on her face when she read it; just have it in her pocket and say she took it off the door. But see security camera above. The show didn’t disclose if there was a security camera, if the handwriting was familiar, if there were fingerprints found on the note, etc. They glossed over that whole area, IMHO, because its only purpose was misdirection of the viewer.

As far as the tox screen on Kono’s blood, my fan theory is that she was conspiring with the Dimas’. They had their corpse jewelry thieving business to hide and the younger one’s murder of the young girl. With Oscar being released and able to do more research on his case, my theory is that they hired someone like Jan, who nobody would suspect, to kill Tim Kono while they had a solid alibi by being on the security camera.

They think it has all gone swimmingly because his death is ruled a suicide, but then our heros Martin, Short, and Gomez start doing what seems like a silly podcast until it gains traction. Then Dimas becomes their sponsor to get control of the podcast, uses his “juice” to suppress the tox screen and to get them evicted from the building.

But, they realize, that our heroes are not going to go quietly, that they pinned the murder on Jan, and are staying in the building and will continue to hamper the corpse jewelry stealing. So they murder the nasty building superintendent lady and try to pin it on Gomez (because she was there the night of the girl’s death) and get rid of her while texting Martin and Short to get them out of the building and give them an alibi, likely so they can wrap up the podcast and blackmail them further into not disclosing the jewelry stuff.

But again it doesn’t go as planned because Martin and Short get pinned for the building lady’s murder.

Just my wild fan theory.

Regarding the grave robbing business, do people really leave expensive jewelry with the deceased? That emerald ring, for, instance, seemed like it was worth a whole lot of money.

For the viewing. High-dollar bling is usually removed before the burying part.

But then wouldn’t the survivors notice the jewelry missing and cry foul? And that would immediately draw attention to that funeral home. There was a line of funeral urns in the Dimas’ apartment. If they were all filled with valuables, they’ve been doing this for a good long time.

Right. But these seemed to be wealthy people to begin with. I can imagine the idea that “grandma would have wanted to be buried with her ring/necklace.”

Yeah, that part didn’t really make sense to me. I guess it’s like UltraVires suggests, but… I didn’t really buy it.

My assumption with that and where I thought they were going was that part of the Dimas’ operation was making fakes and doing swaps. That’s why the jewelry was being mailed and why IIRC we see several photos the jewelry–reference photos for whoever was making the fakes.

That’s an interesting idea but if the fake jewelry copy was removed by the survivors to take home, sooner or later someone is going to get something appraised or try to sell it and then it will be obvious that it’s worthless.

And I thought the jewelry was being mailed to their fence and the photos used to market it on the black market.

The cover for the funeral home would be “oh that’s too bad that what you thought was a priceless heirloom was a fake ALL this time.” The onus is on the family to prove that it was a legitimate item–and as this isn’t a “catering to the wealthy” funeral home, the clientele may not be in the position to take things further.

Wasn’t Kono receiving jewelry in the mail? I thought that was the package he was mad about not getting yet in the first episode.

Again–that’s where I thought it was going but I don’t think they set anything like that up in the show.

Perhaps but I’m glad not to be the only one who didn’t understand what was going on.

I definitely thought they were removing jewelry that the next-of-kin wanted their loved ones buried in - that’s why Theo was in the basement right after the viewing that Mabel & Oliver snuck into. You’d think they’d get caught after 10+ years of that scheme, but apparently a death threat from Nathan Lane is utterly terrifying and completely believable.
Or maybe that’s one of the “loose ends” they’re discussing - like why it took 10 years to sell the emerald ring.

And here I realize I lost all interest in this show around the hearing impaired episode.

I’ll quote Ebert here:

Any main character whose purpose is not readily apparent must be more important than he or she seems

Ebert’s Law of Economy of Characters:

Movie budgets make it impossible for any film to contain unnecessary characters. Therefore, all characters in a movie are necessary to the story—even those who do not seem to be. Sophisticated viewers can use this Law to deduce the identity of a person being kept secret by the movie’s plot: This “mystery” person is always the only character in the movie who seems otherwise extraneous. I see that season 2 of Only Murders in the Building will be coming out in about four weeks.
Time to re-watch season 1.

Will season 2 drop at once or are they doing an episode a week?

Oh, thanks! I might’ve missed that.

It looks like they will have the first two episodes on June 28th and one a week until August 23rd, making 10 total episodes.

Thanks. I’ll put it in my viewing queue and catch up in August.

Well, it’s back, and you can tell it’s their second season.

Does that mean it is better or worse?
