Only Murders in the Building

“You can tell it’s our second season” is a quote from one of the episodes.

Doh!

Thanks

They are attracting some major talent as regulars. Last season we had Nathan Lane, Tina Fey and Sting (maybe others I forgot). So far this season we have Tina again, Amy Schumer and Shirley MacLaine.

I’m really not enjoying this season as much as the first one.

That’s a shame. I’m loving it.

The season so far has been okay for me; I’m enjoying it well enough. They also gave us the wonderful “Angel in Flip Flops”:

I’m liking that the building itself is becoming one of the characters. I just hope it doesn’t become like the house in the first season of American Horror Story. We need and deserve a human villain.

I even saw Mabel smile in the latest episode! It was for only a second, but it’s the most expressive she’s been all season. Actually I adore her lack of emotion - so hipster

I think the “meta” stuff is pretty funny, this week with the podcast fans in the diner. I find that sort of thing to be hilarious - I like it when shows don’t take themselves too seriously! It seems very Martin/Short.

This latest episode her lack of mouth movement (which I never noticed before) drove me INSANE because she was trying to communicate with a deaf guy!! And then she was speaking without moving her mouth while HE was driving and he was staring at her giving this big soliloquy. I was mad at the character, the actors and the writer. Jeeeeez!!

I don’t even know what happened in this episode because I’m still focused on her dumb mouth.

I do remember laughing at Martin Short explaining how he knows what perjury is. (He doesn’t know)

I do like this show but this episode was terrible IMHO.

I STILL DON’T KNOW ASL!!!
That got me.

Why didn’t they just text at each other? And I agree that her talking in the car while looking directly forward and he’s driving made no sense.

Yeah, I think the writers dropped the ball on how to handle their interactions. There was an exchange earlier where she asked him about lip reading, and he said he could only pick up a third of what is being said, and it’s not like in the movies. But there was not real adjustment on her part.

Personally, I think they are missing the characters history - they both knew each other from years ago in the building. I would have assumed they would have worked out how to communicate back then. Instead, they make her seem like a totally clueless knucklehead, which is not an established character trait.

They lived in the same building but he was several years older and not in their crowd
Zoe interacted with him but I don’t remember any indication that Mabel had any relationship with him. I did yell at the tv about talking to a lip reader while he’s driving through New York City. I don’t have a problem driving in the city but I certainly don’t take my eyes off the road for a second.

Season over. Decent season closer. Some funny bits. I’d eat liverwurst and marmalade. Overall though a bit too cute and self aware.

I like the self referencing. I also liked the way the opening titles changed in subtle ways each week.

Not sure about the reveal though. Bit of a weird jumble.

I agree on the confusing ending. I’ve read 3 explanations online as to what happened at the end and I’m still not sure what Poppy’s goal was.

What seemed plain to me from the episodes was: She wanted to get her own podcast. She wanted it to come with the Cinda Canning seal of approval so it’d be instantly successful, or she just couldn’t imagine starting one by herself. She thought this time she would get some actual credit for bringing Cinda a juicy lead and be promoted from unnoticed lackey.

What other explanations did people put forth?

I could imagine she was also jealous of these nobodies having success doing what she wished she could do, but if there was evidence for that (other than choosing to implicate them) I missed it.

Doesn’t the setup for Season 3 contradict the titles of the show and the in-universe podcast?

Maybe they’ll change the title to “Only Murders In A Building.”

Maybe Paul Rudd’s character had moved into the celebrity penthouse?
