"Only the Lonely" movie - help me remember the ending!

Yesterday, while flodjunior and a buddy were up in his room and totnak and I were cuddling on the couch flipping through the channels (the fella’s away at the moment), I came across a movie called “Only the Lonely” which I saw in the theaters when it first came out, 1991 or so. Romantic comedy, Maureen O’Hara as the dominating needy mom, John Candy as her faithful son Danny the Cop, Ally Sheedy as the sweet shy girl he falls in love with. Sound familiar?

In one of the last scenes of the movie, Danny has sent his mom to live with family in Florida, and has pulled some serious strings to get a train to make an unscheduled stop so he can try to win back Theresa’s heart. Just as everything looks well again, Danny has another one of his fantasies about horrible things happening to his mother: her plane is hijacked by some of the least convincing terrorists ever to grace the silver screen. Mom was in the lavatory, and steps out just as the head bad guy has ordered everyone DON’T MOVE, and----

A great crash was heard from flodjunior’s room. By the time I discovered its (innocent) cause and dealt with the consequences, the movie was over. And I’m left wracking my brains to remember the ending.

Something in the back of my head says that Mom stops the terrorists all by herself, turns to the camera, and says, “Don’t you worry about me any more, Danny. I can take care of myself.” Back to the station platform, where Danny and Theresa smooch to swelling violin music as the train pulls away, &c. But that can’t be it, can it? Even by the standards of romantic comedies, that is just too, too corny.

Does anyone else remember this movie? How does it end?

As far as i can remember you’ve pretty much got it - candy’s mother gets grabbed by a terrorist and we (the audience) think “oh no - she’s going to say you abandoned me danny AGAIN!!!”

BUT

a brief fight ensues and the old guy that Candy’s mother ended up on the plane with helps her beat the bad guy. She says the “i can take care of myself” line etc. etc.

You are correct, garius. The only thing I can add is that Anthony Quinn helped JC’s mom fight the terrorist a bit. She did most of the ass-kicking, though. Happy ending, all smiles.
