Onomatopoeia - What's you favorite?

Okay, I know there’s a “What’s your favorite word?” thread out there, but what about words that aren’t in the dictionary? There are plenty of onomatopoeic words that I love, that can’t be found in Webster’s. For example:

**Blorp

Glub**

and some from the world of comics:

Bamf!

and

Snkkt!

Got any more?

Aargh! Obviously, the title should be, “Onomatopoeia - What’s your favorite?” <slaps head>

Slither.

Susurrous.

and a home slang term for the sound of a small cat (or a big cat with a little-cat voice): Squeep!

I’m also abnormally fond of the word “fruitbat” although it’s not at all onomatopoeic.

Corr, whose Geeg meeps and squeeps and runs in circles (he weighs 17 pounds, so he’s hardly a kitten)

Trove.

That’s okay, Scott, we’ll just chalk it up to that insanity you seem to be enjoying.

I’m keen on the following:

Whizz
Clang
Fump (okay, maybe I’m the only one that uses that one)

Flibbertigibbet
It’s rare, but I love it.

Easier to fit in to conversation is: Blaargh

purr

CRASH!!!

whoosh

Wumba

I don’t know if there are any Cerebus fans in the house, but one time, Cerebus was staggering drunk, and his “advisor,” Astoria, gave hima pill that cures drunkenness by bringing on an instantaneous hangover. “WUMBA” was Dave Sim’s onomatopoeia for a splitting, throbbing headache.

KerFLOOie

Eep and

Squee

“Gunghk, gunghk, gunghk”: Noise that whole milk makes when poured into a glass.

“D-duke” is also a favorite, but it’s nature is rather dirty.

“Snap”, “Crackle” & “Pop”.

Not only fun to say but also delicious when mixed with melted marshamallows.

Yoink!

why isn’t onomatopeia one?

anthooo… Splorch

Guess what that is the sound of!

KRANG!

THWACK!

(I have a passion for thwacking people, it makes that satisfyin’ noise.)
(for the less informed, thwacking is merely a smack upside the head. (or at least that’s how I’ve come to define it.)

There’s some great onomatopoeia in Hebrew. My favorite is “bakbuk”, which means bottle. Say it a bunch of times, and you’ll hear it. Also good is “galgal”, which means wheel. It’s the sound of a wheel going over cobblestone street.

Pfffffffffffttttt.

Wooooooooooooooooosh.

*Onomatopoeia every time I see ya
My senses tell me hubba
And I just can’t disagree
I get a feeling in my heart that I can’t describe
It’s sort of lub, dub, lub, dub
A sound in my head that I can’t describe
It’s sort of zoom, zip, hiccup, drip
Ding, dong, crunch, crack, bark, meow, whinnie, quack

                        Onomatopoeia in proximity ya
Rearrange my brain in a strange cacophony
                        I get a feeling somewhere that I can't describe
It's sort of uh, uh, uh, uh
A sound in my head that I can't describe
It's sort of whack, whir, wheeze, whine
                        Sputter, splat, squirt, scrape
                        Clink, clank, clunk, clatter
                        Crash, bang, beep, buzz
                        Ring, rip, roar, retch
                        Twang, toot, tinkle, thud
                        Pop, plop, plunk, pow
                        Snort, snuk, sniff, smack
                        Screech, splash, squish, squeek
                        Jingle, rattle, squeel, boing
                        Honk, hoot, hack, belch

Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah*

—Todd Rundgren

(You really have to hear this song because after each onomatopoeic word he inserts the actual sound effect it describes.)

The first one that came to mind (so it may as well be my favorite) is …

WHAP

I’m thinking of Zappa - “He went right upside the head of his favorite baby seal, he went, WHAP.”

The way that line is delivered always just makes me chuckle.

i just like the word onomatopoeia. if i ever have a daughter…
