I have a 27 inch Tube style Sony TV that I never watch. It’s been sitting on my dresser unused for about 8 months. I wanted to move it to the den downstairs.
When I tried to slide the TV forward into my arms I heard snapping sounds and the entire bottom stand just crumbled away. I maneuvered the set onto a 2 wheel dolly and into the living room. When I took it off the dolly I saw I cracked the front plastic.
The glass screen extends beyond the cracked plastic and there appears to be no damage there.
What I need to do now is get it down about 15 steps to a landing then down 15 more without any further damage.
How do I do this, and how can I test it for damage to the tube if that is even a concern?
Well, you can try the tried-and-true “plug-it-in-and-see-if-it-explodes” test. My guess is that its fine, as long as you can see that the glass on the CRT is intact.
As far as moving it, you want to make very, very sure that there are no exposed metal chassis or electronics where the base was. If there is, or a chance there might be, you may be risking death by moving it if someone’s hand comes in contact with a high power component.
If you damaged the tube itself, you’d know instantly by either being showered in glass bits as the thing implodes, or by a hellish hissing noise, indicating that the glass is cracked and the tube is losing its internal vacuum slowly.
Without knowing the particular model of TV, my best guess is the TV is OK, just a bit ugly. As long as unsuspecting fingers can’t touch internal wiring or circuit boards, it’s probably OK.
OTOH, no time like the present to go shopping for a new TV!
Use a helper. Carefully put the TV on a similarly sized piece of plywood or equivalent, then move it. I’d think this would protect the TV from further disintegration (since you won’t be using the damaged case as a grip) and protect you from being electrocuted.
No implosion, no snake sounds from the TV so thats a relief.
It’s a big Sony so I am a little concerned about the Shadow Mask if my model has one.
I wish I had the money for a new TV but I don’t.
Forget my back, if I tried to move it down the stairs by myself I would need a new TV. I do not have the strength to handle moving something that heavy and bulky down the stairs safely. I have a friend who will move it the rest of the way for me.
Good idea about the plywood. My father suggested putting plywood over the stairs and sliding it down that. I told him with the angle it would be at I don’t think I can keep the TV from sliding out of control. It looks like it would be a 30 degree anglea
Thanks. Thinking about this more, you could grab a couple or so bungie cables and secure the TV to that plank, then you and your friend could just haul it around like its on a stretcher.
