Open Secrets in Hollywood: what else is out there?

Brett Ratner, come on down!

Dustin Hoffman, you’re up.

I’m very heartened by the fact that so many men and women have come forward with their stories, regardless of the fame and success level of those they say behaved poorly.

Punishing doers of evil is only a very small part of this. The much bigger part is to reinforce that it’s always acceptable for someone to come forward and tell their story if they think someone sexually harassed or assaulted them, no matter their fame or success. Not just for those victims who have stayed silent, but for future victims who will hopefully feel much more comfortable to call out bad actors in the moment or in the immediate aftermath.

By far the most powerful way to remove the stigma of being victimized is for victims to come forward.

No Netflix didn’t suspend production at all, and didn’t stop production due to this charge. Netflix had decided that season six was going to be the last season before the story broke, and they’re already done with filming it. The announcement is in print magazines that were printed before Rapp came forward.

Hmm. You sound like you know this, and I don’t disbelieve you, but that is very different from what the press is reporting.

BREAKING: NPR News Chief Michael Oreskes says he’s resigning following sexual harassment allegations.

I’ve heard some of the SNL stars either elude to or out right accuse A. Whitney Brown of getting Chris Farley on heroin and causing his death.

Although my experience in the area is just hearing the stories, times your experiences by 100 when talking about the New York scene. Rapp’s story begins with him meeting Spacey at the Limelight which was a notorious NYC club that wasn’t big on checking IDs or caring how much coke you brought in. The movie Party Monster is about the club a few years later.

It was my understanding that it was already going to be the last season but the filming had not been completed. Spacey was reported to have not been on the set when the story broke and his scenes may have already been completed.

Actually, I was thinking ‘filming with Kevin Spacey’ not production - they announced that they were already done filming him and that he wasn’t scheduled to do any more. I think the ‘we have stopped production’ is more of a publicity move than a real decision, so I was dismissing it, but they have announced that they are temporarily stopping production.

It’s been a week. We’ve no idea what will happen to his career. If he’s just out of A-list work for a year, so what?

Then we’ve lost a great actor for a year, that’s what. And it’s possible he may not return to acting. That may not bother you but it does me.

Perhaps it will be some small comfort to you that many victims now feel much less afraid of coming forward and telling the truth of how they were mistreated.

Seems like a bargain to me.

Real victims, yes. People who claim the status for a trivial incident decades ago, not so much.

What’s real and what’s trivial? Who makes that delineation?

So if you were alone at a party and I were to approach you, grab you, carry you to the bed, then laid on top of you holding you in place until you struggled free, you’d be cool with that ‘trivial incident’? What would make it non-trivial - would I need to remove some clothes, or get further along in touching you?

It doesn’t matter whether you think it’s trivial or not. It’s always okay to tell the truth about something that happened to you against your will. It doesn’t matter who did it. It’s always okay, and shame on anyone who suggests that sometimes it’s not okay.

More people come forward about Kevin Spacey.

Do you have a graph we could borrow that demonstrates how good an actor one must be to negate a given severity of crime? We’d hate to upset your movie watching any more than we already have.

Randall was married to his first wife, Florence, for 54 years. His second wife emphatically says he was straight. I’ve always thought this was probably a case of people confusing an actor with the roles he plays. Rock Hudson, Van Johnson, and Cary Grant were also confused with their (straight) screen personas.

On a separate note, I have to wonder whether Hollywood/the entertainment industry has more open secrets than politics, business,or medicine, or education, or if it just seems that way.
