Opera Lovers, New York City Opera and Carmen.

We went to see Carmen last evening at City Opera. Now, I am not a huge opera fan. I know a bit more than I should know about it because the Wifestrocity is a coloratura soprano.

We’re one row from heaven. The overhang in Ring 4 mutes some of the voices and some of the instruments, but I must say it was a fairly lively performance. I’ve seen Carmen more often than any other opera. It was my first, in 1978 at the Met. This one was brisquely staged, nicely lit and the set decor was extremely economical.

Apparently the cast is filled with folks making their debut in the role. Altogether, an enjoyable evening.

What opera do you love, and what’s your best City Opera story? Mine is this : last night the man who plays the tavern owner in Act II turned out to be a guy the Wifestrocity used to teach with. Kind of fun, to see that he is still working at City Opera- and amusing that he gave himself a role onstage.
