I wonder what would happen if a parent brought a typical girl perhaps as young as 9 or 10 years old to the doctor and said to give her a pelvic exam and put her on the pill, and the doctor talked to the girl who was confused why her parent wanted her on the pill, and upset by the idea of having a pelvic exam. I can only hope the doctor would refuse.
And my explanation would be that while I do hope she will not be sexually active, since she has started menstruation, she is now fertile and rape does happen. I do not want her to bear the child of a rapist.
I do believe that I have mentioned that I was raped twice on board previously. I was lucky that I was on the pill and no pregnancy resulted, but look how many girls that have been raped in history have ended up pregnant.
Well, of *course *it is.:dubious:
I keep telling my cat to plow the back 20 but she never listens
Strictly speaking, livestock are slaves.
I’m an anarcho-capitalist. I believe that government is an UNnecessary evil, and that every single function it attempts to perform could be done better by the private sector.
I’m neither a Bulls fan nor an MJ fan–hell, I’m just not into fandom–but MJ was easily both the greatest offensive player of his generation and the greatest defensive player of his generation. His game was very much “complete.”
Too bad he’s such an asshole.
Close but not completely true.
If you are conscientiously opposed to public insurance because of individual religious considerations, or you are opposed because of the principles of the religious denomination you belong to, you can claim an exemption from the self-employment tax by filing Form 4361 with the IRS. About 30% of clergy do this. Although this choice is “irrevocable”, Congress has voted to allow them to opt back in at least 3 times.
Ministers can exclude from their income a rental allowance or the fair rental value of a parsonage that is provided to them as pay for their services. (The latter was actually actually just ruled unconstitutional yesterday by a US District judge in WI, but I’ll leave it here.)
Churches are not required to withhold federal or state income taxes.
All but one of the 50 states exempt religious employers from paying unemployment benefits.
FL and some other states exempt religious publications from sales tax though this has been found to be unconstitutional in some other states. Other states give a special status to sacramental equipment under sales tax. These exemptions are based on the item not the purchaser so it is not the same as the exemption granted to not-for-profits.
Barnes & Noble exempts the Bible, the Talmud, the Koran, and others on a short list of “scared texts.” I suspect there are other religions whose books are not exempt.
I’m ready to stop being the world’s superpower. Let someone else have the reins for a while.
America will still be the leader of a multinational Western coalition until India fully develops or the Chinese democratize unless you want an unstable world system with the Chinese and Russians having far more power than currently.
You would tell a 9-year-old that?? “Hey, you need to get this painful, extremely invasive procedure done and take this pill every day so you won’t end up pregnant if someone rapes you” (I realize you might not put it exactly like that but it would have to be pretty close to get the message across). I think the odds of that being traumatizing approach 100%, while the odds of her getting pregnant from rape (at such a young age, with a careful parent) are tiny.
75% of everybody are more-or-less bastards.
Given that I started at my families typical age of 13, I would consider that my daughter would probably start then as well, but to be perfectly blunt, WHEN THE FUCK WOULD YOU TELL A MENSTRUATING GIRL ABOUT SEX AND GETTING PREGNANT, AFTER SHE GETS PREGNANT?
Kids experiment, and they can experiment at 5 years old. Kids can get raped, and it can happen at 1 month old. Rapists are not going to stop and think about the age of the victim - especially if they are specifically targeting juveniles.
I don’t want to be your daughter, thanks. I would like to know that I have a doctor I can discuss sexual issues with that has my parents full permission to do what I need, not what their archaic superstition ridden ‘religious’ scruples mandate I need. I spuuose your daughter is not going to get the HPV vaccination to reduce her chances of cancer? And if she does get raped, tell her sucks to be her that she wasn’t prepared just in case.
You don’t have to tell the child any of that crap in order to actually do what they need. You don’t actually have to teach a kid about rape to teach them about dangerous interactions with strangers. And no one said anything about not telling them the basics about sex.
Which leads me to my blasphemy: the irrationality around rape with a lot of women should be treated like a mental disorder PTSD is probably what actual rape victims have, while many others have a phobia of the situation.
Don’t get me wrong, I sympathize greatly. But I don’t think we should treat these opinions the same as more rational ones. And that people need a lot more help to deal with this sort of thing.
Which leads me to a smaller one: Everyone needs to go through therapy, if only to make sure things are okay.
No, my daughter knew about sex years before she started menstruating. Big difference between that and “you need to take these hormones every day and have this sexually traumatic exam because you might get raped”.
And yet, a very tiny percentage of elementary school girls become pregnant as a result of rape. And an even tinier percentage of ones with parents who are careful about who they’re left alone with (not suggesting it’s the parents’ fault if a kid gets raped, but it’s much more likely to happen to the kids of negligent parents, of course).
I would let my daughter get on the pill anytime she wants. We’re not talking about giving permission, we’re talking about doing it whether she wants to or not. And I don’t know where you got the idea that I’m religious (I’m not).
Yeah she is, but that’s just a few shots, not pap smears.
Umm…I’ll agree that a pelvic exam is invasive, but if it’s that painful you really need to find a new doctor.
Yeah, right. Like that of Iran, Afghanistan or Texas.
I’ve had them from several different doctors and they were all painful. And I’m not a little kid (I was 17 when I first had one).
You really do need to get a new doctor, or get a diagnosis of some form of malformed birth canal that requires a smaller speculum or different position.
I do recall that someone on this board discussed painful pelvic exams because of a medical condition [I believe it was this board - perhaps about 10 years ago? I have been hanging out reading the Dope since I discovered it when I had an AOHell account back in 1999] and the general consensus of the doctors on the board was that many gyns are ham handed hacks when it comes to giving pelvics to women with anything other than pretty vanilla birth canals. I had my first pelvic when I was about 4 years old - I was born with a slightly malformed urethra that was not allowing my bladder to properly void, and had a succession of bladder infections that ended up requiring a small operation to release the stricture when sounding did not work. It was explained to me properly as an examination to see what was needed to keep me from getting infections and would be an exam that I would get regularly later when I grew up into puberty. No fuss, no trauma.
