As others are saying ‘disco’ as the music genre that we all hate came after the establishment of discotheques. Discotheques played popular music and popular dances like the Twist, the Frug, and the Watusi. Disco music started a revival of dance music after Rock entered the seriously stoned age and dancing disappeared for a while.
