Why No 1970's/Disco Revival?

Isn’t it about time to start having 1970’s revivals now?
The disco era was so cool-bellbottom pants, wild polyster fashions, and loud, bumping music.
Since it’s been 31 years since that era closed, hasn’t there been enough time for a new generation to discover this?

Wasn’t there already a 70s revival sometime in the 90s?

Bellbottoms and corduroys were totally “in” for a while in the late 90s. But disco itself, not so much. There was some scattered stuff. But there was no real “scene”, and nobody wanted to be pegged as a disco artist – the best they would admit to was having a disco influence. Then again, what exactly is disco? It’s always been poorly-defined. Unless a song has a very deliberate 70s retro sound, it can be called “house” or “hi-nrg” or “eurodance”, all of which are basically a variation of disco produced after 1980.

I think it’s because disco has morphed into techno. It turned into New Wave dance and that stuff turned into the various factions of techno/house/dance/electronica. Sort of like how, in the early 80s there was rap and there was rap. Rap grew in popularity and different artists keep putting different spins on things. Pretty soon, there’s rap, gangsta rap, hip hop, jazz hop, etc. Nowadays, we have house, dubstep, ambient, electronica, etc. Music evolves and changes.

Go listen to the band Cut Copy and you’ll find out what happened to disco. It just grew up.

There is. It’s called nu-disco. I am not a fan of the original, but like the revival.

I tend to think of club music as the child of disco. I know it doesn’t sound exactly alike but it’s music that people are supposed to dance to which seems to me what disco was all about.

How can you revive something that never really died?

Are you kidding? It seemed like half the clubs open in the late '90’s in NY were disco-themed. Bell bottoms, fros, the works! Give it another 5-6 years and the next revival will begin.

As a White Sox fan I eagerly await Disco Revival Demolition Night.

My generation has to bear the shame of KC and the Sunshine Band forever.
I wouldn’t wish this burden on a new generation.

I always hated disco. I listened to arena rock. Queen, Journey, Boston and REO Speedwagon. in the 70’s

I grew up same time as you.. and I loved both. I never got why it had to be an either or thing.. Zeppelin was great.. but i also liked to dance with women and get my groove on..

A revival would be nice.. accompany that with some better dancing.. Another solution to get a tubby America to move again..

Cause it sucks.

EXCEPT. The use of Clavinet for bass lines ruled.

Once was enough.

Oh God no. No dancing, no bad music. I can’t believe there are more than 4 people with this view in the entire USA, and I’m including Disco Stu. Revive the clothes if you must, or the cars if you want. But don’t ever bring back that “music.” Just my opinion, of course.

I got that shit jammin’ in my car…Barry White…Gibson Brothers…Village People…Kool and the Gang…classics for summer driving!

Do we ask where rock disappeared to, and whether there will be a rock revival, because the radio doesn’t sound like Elvis or CSN or Steely Dan any more?

#4 through #7 are correct. Disco never went away. Ever since the '70s, it has been and remains the primary rootstock of dance music on the planet. It’s only a very specific iteration of “disco” as a pop trend that faded. What do you think Lady Gaga is doing, exactly? Not disco like 1978, certainly–but one of its many great-grandchildren.

I heard that one reason for the great hatred of disco back then was an unspoken homophobia.

Also, the kids stopped liking it once it became Mom and Dad’s music.

Sirius / XM radio just added a “Studio 54” channel, so maybe it’s on its way back…

Bless you - go to YouTube and find Go For Your Guns by the Isley Brothers for the greasiest groove ever.

As for the OP, per others, it never left.

Give it time. Right now I’m loving Cee Lo Green; if someone does for disco what he’s doing for…whatever it is, a bit pre-disco, I’m thinking…there will be plenty of new fans.
