Oregon Science Fiction and Fantasy Project

I need to make a list of Oregon science fiction and fantasy authors (both past and current), and science fiction movies and television shows made in and/or based in Oregon. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Start with Le Guin.

Most definitely! I had the pleasure of conversing with her at a few Orycons and a writer’s conference in Portland.

Frank Herbert was born in Tacoma but spent a lot of his years in Oregon.

Do you count genre comics creators like DeConnick and Fraction?

The SyFy Channel series Eureka was set in the fictional city of Eureka, Oregon.

You probably already know there’s a Southeast/Portland sci fi/fantasy writers group. If not, they sound like a fantastic resource.

Not so fictional.

Now it definitely goes on the list.

Sterling, A Meeting in Corvallis and the other books in that sequence.

There may be some stories in the METAtropolis books, which are about Cascadia.

John Varley has lived in Portland and Eugene, not sure what he might have produced during those times.

I’ll check, but he will probably go on the backup list unless I can’t get a suitable number of names.

IMDB search for genre:Sci-Fi, filming location:oregon

and here’s a search for fantasy.

Coraline was both made and set in Oregon.

Much appreciated!

Robert Sheckley was in Oregon for a while. Got divorced and remarried in Portland. Don’t know if he wrote anything while here.

Sheckley left OMNI in 1981 with his fourth wife, writer Jay Rothbell: they subsequently traveled widely in Europe, finally ending up in Portland, Oregon, where they separated. He married Gail Dana of Portland in 1990. Sheckley continued publishing further science fiction and espionage or mystery stories, and collaborated with other writers such as Roger Zelazny and Harry Harrison.

Theodore Sturgeon ended up in Oregon, although I don’t remember the details of his timeline.
