Ori and the Blind Forest is a beautiful, beautiful game

It was just released on Wednesday for Xbox and PC. It’s a $20 platformer. Think Rayman.

Anywho, here’s the launch trailer. The game itself is just as gorgeous when you’re playing. I’m not that far into the game itself, but I’m enjoying it so far.

It’s getting incredible reviews, saying it’s a damn near perfect platformer, praising it’s beauty and soundtrack (which I personally love). Also, apparently there are parts that are really difficult.

Thoughts?

It’s already on my wishlist, though I can’t purchase it right now.

Anyone who thinks video games aren’t art should be forced to play this.

I think the first fifteen minutes rival the first fifteen minutes of Up for trying to destroy your heart and soul and leave you a withered shell of a human. The gameplay is also good, though I’m not too far in. It’s odd that this clicks for me, because I’m not hugely fond of Metroidvania games. This actually kind of reminds me of Nifflas’ games like Within a Deep Forest or the Knytt games.

Is it me or does the main character look like he comes from Adventure Time?
So, this is the kind of game where you can go wherever you want on the map, provided you gained the relevant abilities?

I real answer can come from someone else, but it is like that from what I have heard.

Mostly yes, but some areas are locked behind a door until you find the right “key.”

So pretty. Wow.

Pretty fun so far. Great visuals and music. Gameplay is very much like Metroid.

I’ll wishlist it. But is the save system really obnoxious? Do you get a lot of opportunities (I am the type to Ctrl+S in MS Word every time I take a breath). It sounds like that old Resident Evil-style save hoarding.

Naaaaah. Maybe if you never explore and find ANY of the extra energy orbs, but between the various upgrades for your character, and the map pickups, you can pretty much save whenever you want by the time the game gets hard. I’ve found myself “wasting” saves just for HP. Hell, most of the time the devs will put one of the energy restoring items in places obviously meant to signify “we’re doing you a favor and letting you save here if you want.”

Granted this is all noting that I don’t use the ability that uses the same resource much. It’s way easier to just use your moves to bounce past everything in this game.
