There is a joke going around with Ben Affleck, I’ve noticed. Everytime he appears on SNL, for example, he jokes that he is gay. Here is a Youtube version of a Jimmy Kimmel clip where he jokes he is gay. Yet I looked up Ben Affleck on Wikipedia, and he is in fact 100 percent straight, although he does have a family member who is gay, I understand.
So what is the joke? Why does he always pretend he is gay, and why is that supposed to be funny: Ben Affleck=gay?

This is what I call a “feral donkey” guess – not a WAG but with inadequate substantiation. Ben and Matt Damon have been the closest of friends since childhood-- the kind of close friends for whom a hug, arm over shoulder, etc., is perfectly natural. In an industry as hungry for tittilation as Hollywood gossip, that spins as “one or both are gay” – and Ben’s the more demonstrative.
Just curious: you needed to look up Ben Affleck on Wikipedia to confirm that he’s straight? Wasn’t his overly-publicized relationship with Jennifer Lopez, or his current marriage to Jennifer Garner proof enough?
I agree with Polycarp that it probably has something to do with Matt Damon, but I think it’s also because he looks like a pretty-boy. The roles he plays in movies also tend to portray him as such.
Well, sometimes people claim to be one thing, but they just can’t make up their minds. Take Anne Heche. First she and Ellen DeGeneres are inseparable, now she’s supposedly 100% hetero. And sometimes people lie. And sometimes people hide their true sexuality…(you get the picture)
It may be partly that, but the main joke is that’s it’s a response to an earlier clip from the show where Jimmy’s girlfriend, Sarah Silverman, claimed she was “fucking Matt Damon” (getting back at Jimmy for a running gag where he often claims “Our apologies for Matt Damon, we’re out of time”). Since Damon and Affleck are good friends, it only makes sense for Affleck to team up with Kimmel to get back at Sarah and Damon. Although some people do see it as one big gay joke.
Heche has never said that she’s 100% hetero, or hetero at all for that matter. Borrowing the quote from Wikipedia, but I have the magazine at home and can confirm the quote later, Heche has stated “I have been very clear to everybody that just because I’m getting married does not mean I call myself a straight.”
As for Affleck and Damon’s being gay, IIRC that story got its first big push when they took their mothers as their dates to the Oscars when they won for Best Screenplay for “Good Will Hunting.” Two young hot successful guys in their twenties are going to the Oscars with their mothers? Gay.
I saw a link on MSN’s homepage about a week ago with Kimmel and Affleck posing together in tuxedos, hugging each other and when I clicked through there was a few more like pictures. Perhaps this is the source of the latest “speculation.”
