Anyone know where the term “white shoe law firm” comes from?
Thanks (ignore my earlier post).

It’s “white SHOE”, not show. From preppie bucks (white suade shoes).
From the Preppie Handbook:
White bucks. Classic oxford style only, please. White suedes (“buckskin”) with brick-red crepe sole. Strictly a late-spring and summer shoe. Appropriate for garden parties. Use a chalk bag, if a touch-up is necessary.
Akkk. I’m sorry, wordsmyth, for my momentary dyslexia (sp?); I thought you typed white “show.” I apologize for my reprimand. (But the explanation of the origin still stands.)
To Stuyguy:
Good catch, no dyslexia. I mistakenly posted “white show” the first time, then posted a corrected message. And thanks for your answer.
along the same lines, i’ve had a question that’s been bugging me for ages –
where did the term “beaten like a red-headed step-child” originate? does anybody know?
Yup, somebody knows.
like a red-headed stepchild
Redheaded stepchild
“Beat you like a redheaded step-child”
In general, it’s a good idea to use the “search” feature to see if a question’s already been asked and answered on the boards… It makes things easier for everyone.
By the way, wordsmyth, may I ask what you mean by “posting a corrected message”? It looks like you only have two posts, and those would be the OP of this thread (the correct version), and your post saying that you corrected it. In general, if you make a mistake in a post, you should either just let it slide, apologize in another post in the thread, or, if it’s really egregious, e-mail the moderator (myself or manhatten for this forum), and ask us to correct it.
