Origin of the term: "Social Studies"?

When did history, geography, and related topics such as human behavior all get lumped under the general label of “social studies”? Obviously, the term’s been around a bit, but I’ve always wondered when this came about.

Social studies was an elementary school term. When I got to high school the class was called Modern Problems.

That was about 35 of your Earth years ago.

IIRC, we called it “social studies” in elementary school and middle school; in high school it was actual separate classes for history, geography, government, and economics. South Carolina public schools, 1974-1986, FWIW.
