Original Book Titles vs. Movie

Two questions: (a) Did I read correctly that “A Christmas Story” was originally entitled “In God We Trust, All Ohters Pay Cash”? Also, (B) there’s a new movie out entitled “Catch Me If You Can”. Is this based on the autobiography of the same title written by a thief/con-man who eventually became an advisor to the FBI? - Jinx

The book In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash was part of the basis for A Christmas Story, yes.

Yes

Interesting related point:

I find it funny how it seems book titles and cover art change to reflect the films based on them.

In particular, I remember when In the Name of the Father came out. I saw it, loved it, and wanted to go get the book it was based on (an autobiographical book by the main character). The book now carried the same title as the movie (although it hadn’t originally) and sported Daniel Day-Lewis’s face on the cover.

Now the book and movie are forever linked.

It happens: if a book becomes a movie, then the book publisher will republish it as a tie-in. Putting the star of the movie on the cover makes it even more clear.

My copy of “The Sheep Pig” is called “Babe” and has a shot from the movie on it.

Good book. Fun to read through and check the differences.

Also, my copy of “Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone” is called “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, for some reason.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was the original British title. Evidently, the American published assumed that no one in the U.S. would understand the reference and demanded the change.

If you check the IMDB, you’ll see that Philosopher’s Stone is still the British title of the movie.

Heh-heh. Woosh!

In a snarky mood today.

Movie titles are frequently different fro the titles of the books they are based on, sometimes for good reason, sometims for bad ones. I can’t blame the flks who made The 13th Warrior for not wanting to call their flick Eaters of the Dead. God knows what kind of clientele they’d have pulled in.
