Israeli Models Hit The Catwalk For ‘Modest Fashion Day’
Doper dress wearers would you wear these fashions out and about?
I am neither female nor Jewish and think all that looks fine. I had supposed it was going to be as Midwest Christian Prairie **Modest **clothing, which is always good for a laugh.
Although not to be discouraged.
**Jumpinbloomers **are also amusing.
So, no bare shoulders, dresses below knee length or just above, no plunging necklines, no bare backs?
gaffa:
Actually, sleeves covering till at least the elbow.
In other words, Orthodox Jewish women do not have the right to bare arms.
I’ve never seen anybody anywhere ever wear anything that was ever walked on any fashion show anywhere ever. You mean there are actually fashion shows somewhere where models show real clothes that real people are ever going to wear?
When I worked at the science center, we’d get some Orthodox families visiting sometimes. The women were MUCH more stylish than you’d see in most fundamentalist Christians. (I mean, they were modest, but not frumpy)
I believe you can add “head always covered” to the list.
I’m confident there are fashion shows for the latest burka styles - the models don’t have the get their hair done, but they spend a* long *time on eye makeup.
Amy Farah Fowler could use some of these outfits to unfrump herself.
Looks okay from what I can see of them. Those aren’t very, shall we say, revealing pictures.
Not my style. While I rarely wear dresses, when I do, I wear the skirt much longer, so it sweeps behind me like a cape when I walk. Much more dramatic.
I always thought the flashlight was genius.
Gary T:
That’s only for married women. Given that the article references women in “shidduchim”, the target market is singles, who do not cover their hair for modesty.
The irony is that Mayim Bialik is a practicing Orthodox Jew. As a photo like this shows, it’s totally possible to meet all the Jewish modesty requirements and still have something totally stylish (although purists might say it’s a little too tight). And why does a stylish dress have to be short and skintight anyway?
I live on the edge of an ultra-orthodox neighborhood, and I NEVER see women with dresses that short. They’re considered a bit slutty if they’re showing a little ankle.
Frum yes. Frumpy no.
Well the story in the OP is pretty confusing, since it sometimes refers to “Orthodox” and sometimes to “ultra-Orthodox”. As you note the two groups can have wildly differing interpretations of what is religiously acceptable.
I work in a store owned by Orthodox Jews in a town with a large Orthodox Jewish population. I see those fashions every day.
Right. There’s a huge difference between Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox, in the ways that BOTH genders dress.
I was once flying from San Francisco to France, and we had a short layover in a New York airport. I saw a family group of either orthodox or ultra-Orthodox Jews in the airport. I’m sorry, I don’t know the difference, having never seen either type before. I remember admiring the dresses of the women, because instead of being skimpy or ultra-stylish, they were rich in fabric. The long skirts were deep jewel-toned brocades and they gleamed faintly. I was envious! I’m sure it was partly because I was dressed frumpily at the time, due to the long flight.
