OS X Public Beta

OK, who else is using it? Wanna air your gripes and griefs, share your success stories?

I am here with Internet Exploiter for X, having found OmniWeb to be a product that takes some getting used to (it handles downloads somewhat WEIRDLY).

I have an Apple Menu that works, and an applications menu (and you don’t, nyaah nyaah nyaah) Seriously necessary shareware. Oh yeah, lest I forget, also a menu bar clock.

On the other hand, I have one partition whose icon in X shows up at 1/16 regular size. I want aliases of my hard drive icons on my desktop in their usual places (perhaps awaiting the day that Turly ports FinderPop to OS X, since admittedly I don’t intend to double-click my way to whatever files I want to access??!) and of course having one of them sport this silly little itty bitty teeny weeny icon makes it look ridiculous, but I can’t figure out why it’s doing that. As far as I can tell, it got its icon pasted onto its plain self the same way the others did, but their icons look ordinary-sized in X. I tried redoing it but that didnt’ fix anything. And BTW, you can’t paste a new icon onto an alias in X the way you can in 7/8/9, the damn thing always reverts to the appearance of the aliased object rather than allowing you to impose an appearance on an alias itself.

I haven’t managed to crash it yet, but I have found it necessary to restart after locking up every application in horrid little loops of unfinished instructions all awaiting some processor time (sigh…OK I get impatient!)

Well, my four day ibook is still running 9, and until this former Windows expert figures out 9, (as my best friend said “Yea, I’ll tell you why you’re frusterated with the Mac, it’s because it’s easy to use. You’re just used to thinking like a computer, not a human.” heh.) I’m not messing about with any betas. But I’m still interested in what people think.

So far I haven’t used the Public Beta, only DP4. That will change, though, as I am planning to install the beta this weekend or possibly tonight. I’ll let you know what I discover.

Weirdness I noticed with DP4:
First, after installing it and then switching back to my OS 9 partition, the first time I tried to boot to the OS X partition via the hold-down-option-while-restarting trick, it decided that I hadn’t actually installed it and it would have to reinstall. okaaaay…
Second, I could not find where they had hidden the modem preferences, so I couldn’t get to the internet. As far as I could tell, it had no idea I even had a modem.

I’m hoping those will be taken care of with the beta, especially the second one.

And I wouldn’t touch that thing for money. Not yet, maybe not ever. Trash the whole look/feel of the Mac from the ground up? And WHY? I’ve read alot about it, and the finderless, suspiciously windoze-like interface and navigation system depress the hell out of me. I don’t even wanna know, I don’t give a damn how cool Aqua looks.

Not to mention the fact that none of my relied upon exptensions will work, and most of the really good stuff, like tru multitasking and protected memory, will only work properly with applications that have been written to take advanatage of them.

No, in spite of having a spankin’ new g4/450, I’m not interested. Not until I absolutely HAVE to because everything has been written for it. Which was pretty much my strategy for 8.5 and up…I went from 8.1 straight to 9.04 only a few months ago.

So I guess I have nothing further to contribute. Enjoy yourselves, I admire your adventuraous spirits.
