Other cool forums?

No, it’s a whole board about a car. At least it’s about an entire car.

LS1TECH at #46 is about an engine.

If you value your sanity don’t go to the Etiquette Hell forum. Those people get butthurt about everything - and I do mean everything.

Also, the post titles are purposely vague - “Should I say something?” “Was this rude?” - so you have to click open the link to see wtf they’re talking about.

Speaking of “wtf”, there is a word filter that changes “rude” words and acronyms to annoyingly comical phrases like “poopadities” or “crud monkeys”.

I left there because I could no longer stand reading about how horrible people are to each other and how easily offended people can get over things that simply don’t matter in the whole grand scheme of things. I also got sick of editing-rewriting-sanitizing every post so as to not inadvertently “offend” someone.

That’s when I stumbled onto this board, where you can cuss and be sarcastic and offend all you want. :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry, but neither of these statements is at all correct. The SDMB was pay to post from March 2004 to September 2008. The GB was started shortly after I stepped down as a moderator here in March 2009. At the time, there was a disconnect between the types of discussion wanted by some posters and the SDMB ownership, so rather than be frustrated by that, I set up a board where people who wanted to post with less restriction on what they could say and where they could say it could congregate and cuss at each other. IMO, discussion is most interesting when people don’t have to worry about what they can and can’t say. It’s why I always liked the Pit the best of all the forums here.

I also wanted to try out some features/mods of vBulletin that TPTB here haven’t been thus far been interested in experimenting with. It’s been quite interesting: it turns out you can add all sorts of handy little features if you’re willing to do a bit of tweaking, e.g. LaTeX equations, tables, user-customizable New Posts links, more flexible ignore lists (so you can ignore threads or entire forums if you want), a suspension subforum to separate disruptive posters without permabanning them, Mafia tags and a vote counter. We’ve learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t with some of these features that I think could be useful here if TPTB wanted to incorporate any of them: I’d be happy to advise / guide them through the implementation of anything we’ve done.

Also, note that the BYB forum, where people gossip about other boards, is not actually anonymous. (People who don’t read the forum sticky or the FAQ often don’t realize this.) Anyone who logs in can change the style to reveal the usernames behind every post (and almost everyone who posts there does).

^This is the first I’m hearing of this, but it sounds awful.

You have no idea.

There are also ways to see who “Someone” is even if you aren’t logged in.

Checkout documentingreality.com. A lot of videos on there can’t be found anywhere else

Reddit is a lot of fun, especially if you like MPSIMS and IMHO. But there’s a lot of Pit and GQ material there too. Once you start looking into the subreddits the amount of content is massive.
