Our cat has stopped eating--any left field suggestions?

Make sure she’s getting enough to drink. We lost our guy to kidney cancer (after a 10 year battle with feline leuk) a couple of years ago. He would stop eating, we’d take him to the vet. They’d do a saline IV to rehydrate him, and he’d start eating again. He apparently stopped drinking water from his bowl and would only lick water off the tap in the bathtub we don’t use, which we didn’t find out about until after he died and we found a bunch of hair in the tub.

sigh I still miss him.

Good luck with your girl - I hope she gets her feed back on!

It’s not actual cat milk, is it?

no, it is a milk sub for cats. cats that like dairy love it.

in my experience, most cats will respond to a gravy fancy feast. the fish ones do have a stronger smell over the chicken and beef. most will lick up every bit of the gravy, some of the smaller pieces of meat.

for one cat that was going through heart failure, i would cut up the bigger pieces so it was easier for her to lap them up with the gravy. i had to feed her with a spoon at first, 2 days later she was eating it out of the bowl.

Baby food. I’m seconding Mrs. Cake’s suggestion. That’s what a vet recommended when my cat wouldn’t eat, and she loved it. I still occasionally (very occasionally… that stuff’s expensive!) give it to her as a special treat.

Obviously, I mean the meaty kind of baby food - chicken, turkey or beef. It doesn’t contain all of the vitamins a cat needs, but if it gets some calories in Tammy, it’s worth a try. I think it’s supposed to be easy to digest, which helps if she has any sort of stomach/digestive problems.

NutriMalt by the dudes who make Petromalt the ball remedy. If they won;t lick it of your fingers, you can rub it on their tongue, teeth, lips, and then they will lick it.

You can also get KMR and feed through an eyedropper

Sounds crazy, but one of our cats loved green beans (the kind you get in a can). Even when he wouldn’t eat normal food, he would eat those. Probably a long shot, but worth a try if nothing else is working.

Our current cat had a similar reaction to us going away last year, resulting in a hospital visit because he got dehydrated. The appetite stimulant they gave him eventually kicked in and he started eating (and drinking) again.

Well, tuna and sardines didn’t work, and while she’s veeery slowly gaining weight (largely from snacking on treats on & off throughout the day), we still haven’t found any food-food she likes. Gonna try the chicken livers tonight.

:sigh: Overall, her demeanor and dispostion have improved, but this is still frustrating…

Thirding the baby food. There was a particular brand my vet recommended (Beech Nut maybe?), because it’s mostly meat. If you read the labels, you’ll see that many brands are preservatives, fillers, etc. But when my cat was losing weight, he’s still go nuts for baby food. It was expensive – a jar was about eighty-five cents, and he’d go through at least a jar a day – but it put the weight on. For whatever reason, his favorite flavor was veal. The vet also said to heat it up a bit to make it smell more. That was particularly helpful whenever I served him baby food that had been refrigerated.

He also liked non-baby-food chicken and turkey. I’d get some from the deli, shred it, and put it in his dish. (There was the time that he managed to steal turkey – a friend was sitting on the floor eating a sandwich – the cat jumped up and grabbed the turkey right out!) Anyway, hope those help.

Tried baby food (as mentioned in the OP). No interest at all.

Still, I suppose there are a lot of different brands, so I’ll look again to see if another one might work…
