Our newest pack member

So after endless prevaricating (which you fine folks have been very helpful with), our household is getting another dog!

I already have a pit bull so my boyfriend is adopting one to match. Her name is Shirley*, she’s 7 and very sweet, and she comes home from the pound tomorrow. (The lampshade is off now, her ear is better.) I’m so excited!

We thought about other breeds but just couldn’t think of one we wanted as much as another pittie. There are so many that need homes in this city and I just couldn’t ignore them as we walked through the shelters. We got her though a pit bull rescue group who pulled her out of the city shelter in a sketchy part of town; she’d been in and out of the pound (her owner didn’t seem to really want to take care of her) and a neighbour finally surrendered her.

Help us welcome her!

(Questions and suggestions are also welcome! We are first time two-dog owners.)

  • Surely you’re not serious!

Welcome to more pit love! Great big lovey lumps, they are! My husband didn’t have to work today, and ours was spread out over my side of the bed, luxurating in snuggling up and being lazy with Dad.

Awwww… she’s beautiful, even as a giant cone-head! Congrats.

PS - There’s a Tronna Dope this Sunday… you should come!

Yay! What is yours called?

Those little puppies are going to need a lot of petting*. Hope you’ll be up to the job!

*Nobody ever pets us. Or feeds us. See how neglected and malnourished we are? Oh please. Please. We need pets. And food.

To hear Jimbo (my dog) tell it, he’s pretty neglected already, he never gets fed or walked or permitted on the couch …

Actually I think he’s excited about the new addition, our house has two laps and only one dog and he sees this as a tragic waste.

Toronto dope this weekend? Have fun - I cannot make it but please raise a glass to us! Our big event is a pit bull walk on the lakeshore on Monday, which is really something to see!

prevaricating = lying

Vacillating = going back and forth

Congrats on the new dog! Soon you’ll be like me - 6 dogs.

I thought pit-bulls were banned, or something, due to some insane law in Ontario (or is it just a Toronto by-law?). Does she have all her papers, making it easier to adopt her, or is it because it was through a rescue instead of the SPCA/Humane Society?

I’m just trying to reconcile vaguely remembered news stories with you managing to adopt an adult pit-bull dog in Toronto.

Anyways, both dogs are gorgeous, and I’m glad that there are good owners out there willing to show the world that it’s not the dog’s breed that makes them dangerous!

:smack: That’s what I get for trying to sound smart.

They’re a restricted breed, alright, under Ontario’s Dog Owner Liability Act. They’re legal if they were born before August 2005 (which both of them were, and have papers to prove it). They always wear leashes and muzzles when in public. Before I got Jimbo I was interrogated by a dozen rescue people to make sure I knew the law, and also to make sure I wouldn’t fight him (he is extremely tough-looking).

The law is actually being taken to the Supreme Court of Canada (thank you, Clayton Ruby!) so hopefully soon they can run free.
