LiLi, that is bizarre. First off, even if she were selling it, it wouldn’t fetch more than half its original price. IF that. So the most she could even think of asking you to pay would be around $20. Second, it’s a used gift. You don’t ask people to chip in for A USED GIFT.
She wears things and then takes them back to the store with the tags attached. And has come over to eat my Trader Joe’s stuff so she doesn’t run out of hers.

LiLi, you are correct in saying that it is a faux pas to ask people to chip in for a secondhand gift. It’s tacky and cheap.
However, since QD is providing the freezer (used or otherwise) and you have not contributed anything beyond the initial suggestion, I’m afraid that it is essentially HER gift. You cannot claim gifter status on something that you have not a) bought, b) contributed money to, c) helped make or d) a combination of the above. This means that you are in the hook to contribute SOMETHING to the gift - may I suggest a little set of recipe cards for make-ahead-and-freeze meals?
Last of all, the biggest faux pas is the nasty email from Mr Lissar. Obviously, as your husband, he has the right to an opinion when there is money to be spent, but the final response to QD should have come from you. You’re a big girl, and your husband shouldn’t be stepping up to play Bad Cop (especially given the issues he and QD have had recently).
Yeah, so just because I’d like to fall asleep so that maybe my brain will turn off NOW is apparently a great time for my Restless Leg crap to kick in even though I have taken the max amount of medicine for the evening.

Icky dilemma, LiLi. I like the recipe idea as your contribution. Maybe with a starter meal ready to freeze? But yeah, if she paid $100 four years ago, it would be lucky to be worth $50 now. Sounds like QD and you and Mr. Lissar are in a bad place right now.

As to the email, he also offered her a free guitar and case that needed a ten dollar repair, and the email was half about that, because she got very quibbly about whether she could afford it. That also pissed him off. Should have clarified.
