Outdoor Christmas Decorating

I totally love driving around looking at the decorations at Christmas time. I’ve put up lights but everytime I’ve gone shopping for those wonderful lawn decorations, I’ve never found any. Please fight my ignorance and tell me where to find them.

Yesterday, I found a listing for wonderfully decorated houses in Orange County so we went out to visit the ones here in Huntington Beach. One of the houses we visited even had two snow making machines on the roof and for 10 minutes every hour during the evening, they made snow. I expected it to be little pieces of plastic or something but it was wet when it hit my face. It was wonderful!!! It really miss snow.

Tell me about your yards and/or ones you’ve seen.

OPPS! Mods: would you please fix the title… it was supposed to end with Decorating. However, decorating would work too I guess.

As you wish.

Thank you Czarcasm.

There’s a house here in town with a lit-up oil derrick in front of it, with those chaser rope lights coming out the top like a gusher.

Our own house has a string of colored lights across the front gutter (about 25 feet) with white lights dangling beneath them. This is the compromise reached in our household between my wife (a white-lighter) and my son and me (colored-lighters both).

We also have a 10-foot-tall vinyl Frosty the Snowman who is inflated by a constantly running fan that he straddles. He stands next to our porch, rocking and shifting menacingly in the wind in a most impressive manner. I’m thinking of playing Godzilla screams as background for all the people who dare to come up our front walk.

We have the best holiday display in the neighborhood, my son and I agree.

I have no idea where to buy all those huge decorations, aside from the light reindeer at Target and some things at Michael’s (or the big craft store of your choice).

But I would like to take this opportunity to complain about neighborhoods full of white lights on their houses. I like white lights OK, they are pretty and tasteful. But entire streets filled with nothing but tasteful white lights are BORING. I can’t believe that I’m saying this, but come on, people! Let’s get some glitz and color and tack going here! We’re Americans, it’s Christmas, up with the colored lights!

Thank you.
