Outkast "Way you Move" - Sampled, or entirely original?

I love that song. But it seems like I’ve heard the groove a long time ago. Is that sampled, or just an amazing re-creation of the 70’s sound?

I’ve always said that Outcast sounds like modern day BarKays. But no one ever listens.

But, to answer the OP, Outcast is two guys, right? A DJ/mixologist and a singer/rapper.

So, it is probably a sampled riff spun up enough to match the bpm of whatever they’ve sequenced. The sequence may be original, but, I doubt much more (of the music) is. WAG, though…

Actually both guys (Big Boi, who did “The Way You Move,” and Andre 3000) are both singer/rappers, and although I don’t have the album(s), I believe each guy produced his own side. I’m pretty sure Andre 3000 uses live instruments (and original music, at that) on “Hey Ya,” though.

Checking my album liner:

It credits Antwan Patton (Big Boi), Carlton Mahone, and Patrick Brown as the song’s writers.

I’m assuming Patrick is the given name of Sleepy Brown, the guy who sings the song’s hook.

But I don’t see any mention of samples being used with permission here, so I assume everything’s original.

I wonder about the crediting, though. I have records from Toddy Todd, Marrs, Maggotron, Soul Sonic Force, and numerous Tommy Boy label artists, all of which quite obviously use sampling (whether digitally or by actually spinning) and none of those records have any credits for the originals.

Granted, for this type of music, lately I’ve been ripping MP3s (off of purchased CDs  ), so I haven’t had liner notes of many, many things. So, the conventions of creditting may have changed some. Is it standard now to credit when sampling?

BTW, I chanced on the last bit of an SNL repeat, right after posting, that had Outcast performing this very song. It didn’t appear to be lip synched and they had live instuments along with the two turntables and a microphone.

Kudos to Voodoo and Happy!

Big Boi both producers himself and uses a variety of other producers, including Andre. Carl Mo (obviously the Carlton Mahone credited as a writer) is credited as the producer for The Way You Move with Big Boi co-producing. Dre produced everything on The Love Below

I think some of the best moments on Big Boi’s disc are the ones with Dre producing - Ghetto Musick, Church, Last Call, and similarly one of the best tracks on Dre’s disc is Roses, which features Big Boi rapping. I like the solo efforts, but it really shows how great they are together.

To echo BBVL, Andre is a rapper and an extraordinarily talented one. It’s a shame he rarely does it anymore.

Amusingly enough this song was playing on my IPod when I saw this topic. I bought the song off ITunes for my wife, but I am starting to dig it myself.

Nice production values.

Oh yeah, Epic by Faith No More. Got to go!
