Outlander Season 3 discussion thread (spoilers as it airs)

I love how much Romann has grown up. He can really play a teenage Fergus now. He did a spectacular job.

I wish there had been a little more drama after Ian was born. Part of the issue was Jamie was hiding in the cupboard with a fussing Ian while the redcoats were in the room. Even Young Jamie got into the act when he thought his brother was born dead.

I loved the subtexts, “I miss my husband,” and “I’ll never forgive you for it!” I did miss the roast chicken dinner, but they’ve glossed over Claire’s Catholicism, so I can see why it wouldn’t fit.

I know Frank is a sympathetic character, but unless they’re careful, they’re going to turn Claire into a cold bitch who’s just staying married for the sake of Bree. Frank is trying, but Claire is closing her eyes and imagining Jamie.

I suspect Frank will remain pretty sympathetic until he is not - I remember feeling a shift at some point (don’t recall what caused it) while reading the book.

And I guess I missed it first time around…Claire was not just “dreaming” when she saw Naked Jamie. She was…well, taking care of business.

Poysyn, it’s when Frank tells Claire he’s leaving her and taking Bree. So she couldn’t care less about Frank, but he was going to take away her daughter. IIRC, he also had some racist things to say about Dr. Joe.

And, we’re moving right along. Ron said in his podcasts that the stories are broken along Jamie’s time line, with Claire’s stories embellished from the books. I wish the prison tale could have been spread over two episodes, but MURTAGH!!!

I guess Frank isn’t very discreet, unless he decided not to care as time went on. I’d wish we’d seen more interaction of young Bree with a busy mother. She seemed to be on the sidelines and there wasn’t much resentment built up as was shown in the S2 finale. Maybe we’ll get that later?

I loved Claire’s final scene with Frank, but his death seemed anti-climactic. Couldn’t we at least have seen a stormy sky with dangerous road conditions?

Next week, Helwater!

I too was surprised the prison was one episode. When I read the book, I pictured it being a large chunk of his story.

I think Claire’s story is well done. They made sure to give her a proper final scene with Frank’s body. Was that in the book?

Will John Grey have a spinoff show? That is the question. I’ve never read the books about him.

Yes, I think Claire does have a final, tender goodbye scene with Frank in the books. The Lord John books are quite good. You get a greater insight into his character and his family. I can tell you, his brother’s wife is a hoot. You also learn about his niece, Dorothy, who plays a bigger role in MOBY.

Maybe I shouldn’t have read this thread, LOL. We just started watching Season 1 on the advice of a friend who’s heavily into Celt/Gaelic history. Got midway through the season on Amazon Prime via the Starz app only to discover that we have to PAY for the second half of that season as well as pay twice again for Season 2

Needless to say, we’re not happy campers. We both are loving the story thus far. But having to pay for the second half of a season is a bit much, so I’m not certain we’re going to do so. 'Tis a pity.

I suspect the show wants to minimize the amount of time Claire and Jamie are kept apart.

From what I can tell, we have at least two more episodes to go. So we’ll have Jamie at Helwater, then Claire beginning her search.

I’ve been watching the show, but never read the books. Is there any explanation on how the time travel works? Not so much the going through the stones and such, but are they going along at the same time? Is she ahead of him time wise? It would seem strange as he seems only 7-8 years after she left, while now she’s 18+ years.

Claire has gray hairs now, does she come back and tell Jamie, here’s your grandchild? He’ll be confused as to how that happened. And they thought she was a witch before, what happens when she starts operating on people?

They don’t really explain how it works, but it only works for some people. And it’s rather linear…200 years present time is approximate to 200 years past time. The show is jumping around with the timeline a bit, to flesh out Claire’s side more. In the books, Jamie’s side is shown as they’re researching him. If they can find Jamie is alive 20 years after Culloden, then he’s alive in Claire’s “current” time and she can go back and find him.

Bree is Jamie’s child, not grandchild. Surgery was being done in the 1750s-60s…just of a barbaric kind.

So then it is basically year for year? Or supposed to be then? I knew Bree was his child, I wrote it fast and forgot to put she’s now old enough to have a child so he could have a grandchild. It was kind of a joke, she’s aged 20+ years, he’s gone through a handful of years. He’d think she was nuts saying he did have a grandchild.

It is year for year. But consider these episodes a highlight reel…important things happen to Claire and Jamie but not at the same time.

Episode titles, I think, hint episode 6. No idea if those are accurate hints, though.

I guess the thing about Frank and Claire’s marriage that really struck me was when she wanted to go to the movies, but he’d already seen the films. Claire is confronted with the fact that Frank is “being discreet” but she’s even lost him as a friend. How hard it must have been for Frank, too, to realize the love of your life doesn’t love you anymore. But blowing off her graduation party and bringing his mistress to the house was a low blow.

Agreed. I thought it was hilarious watching my daughter:
last week “Poor Frank!”
this week “Frank is an ASSHOLE!”

I love how they showed the marriage, and the slow erosion of it. It was so understandable and so heartbreaking.

And no one’s fault. I mean, how many times has someone gone back in time and found their soulmate while they’re already married? Almost never, I bet.

But Tobias and Cait were fantastic. So much undercurrent conveyed with a glance or a sigh. Even Frank’s weariness at the end. He wasn’t angry anymore. He finally realized he lost his wife a long time ago.

Yes, Episode 6 is the one that can’t be missed.

And one of the Lord John Gray novels, “The Scottish Prisoner” fleshes out Jamie more and his time at Hellwater, it’s my favorite LJG novel.

Oh, this show tears my heart out. Geneva was excellent, we met Young Willie, and I thought the scenes between him and Jamie were terrific.

Claire standing up (or sitting down, as it were) at the pub was nice. I didn’t know that was an issue for women in the 60s, although I remember my SIL telling me she and her friend got stink eyes when they ordered pints instead of half-pints.

Bree and Roger kiss, and Jamie and Lord John forge a lasting friendship. Sigh.

I am just dying for the reunion episode. DYING, y’all.
