Oval Office gets a makeover

JFK didn’t have a mini-TV studio behind his desk, BTW. Here are some photos of his actual decor:

With Ambassador to Vietnam (and JFK’s former Senate foe, and Nixon’s 1960 running mate) Henry Cabot Lodge Jr.: http://www.jfklibrary.org/NR/rdonlyres/65FAD028-E2F3-466F-9A48-2D1585E12178/38269/65FAD028E2F3466F9A482D1585E12178.jpg

A red carpet was put in while he was in Dallas; he never saw it in place, and LBJ inherited it: whitehousemuseum.org domain name is for sale. Inquire now.

I don’t think it looks Presidential. How much that matters, I haven’t yet decided.

You’re not alone: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/09/02/update-oval-office-make-over/

…Must…resist…temptation…

Bush’s looks classier, Obama’s is much warmer. I like them both.

cnn mentioned that the couches have red, white, and blue threads going through the fabric.

it looks like he wants people to come in get comfy and talk for a while.

Unfortunately, the only picture I could find was of the replica in the Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston, which clearly lacks full authenticity.

What do you think the President does in his office? Write up TPS reports?

It depends what you mean by TPS. Perhaps he’s helping in the Twin Prime Search, but I’d like to think that he’s working on the tall poppy syndrome.

Here is some info. on the rug, if you are curious.

New Oval Office Rug

It looks like the office of someone who prefers to talk through an issue and hear from his advisers.

…and then not know what the hell he should do.

I miss the blue carpet. I know it’s a little tacky, but pretty much every TV/movie representation features the blue carpet, so it’s a defining feature in my mind. I didn’t even realize that Bush took it out.

It’s gone in the direction of a hotel suite.

I got no taste; still, I do not like the new decor. It looks like the sort of industrial, high-use furniture you would see in a really nice business center at your local Hilton. The walls and carpet have that brown designed to hide the dirt (by looking dirty all the time).

The Bush sun-bust carpet was pretty cool, to my way of thinking. But as I said, I have no taste.

Exactly. You put your finger on just what was bothering me about it, why I have a “low rent” association upon seeing it.

It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but you can see whoever picked out all of this (Michelle?) grew up in a household where occupants had to do their own cleaning. And once the kids spilled grape juice on the couch, that was it: you’re now gonna be sitting on a grape juice stained couch for the next ten years.

That’s pretty much what I was thinking: why aren’t the walls white or blue? Why is the carpet so bright? Why is there so much of that cream color and that funky beige that women and shoes call “taupe”?

I do like that the couches look like anything that any American might have in their living room. They don’t look like $20,000 couches; they look like they were bought at Levitz. I like that, it makes me feel like teh Prez is at least a little bit like a regular person.

I stumbled across this somewhere the other day, then had to google to figure out where it was.

I don’t think Michelle had anything to do with this. It was all paid for by a non-profit set up to do these renovations/makeovers, and the designer was some guy named Michael Smith.

Well, well. A former president of the Oxford Union agrees with me!

And if you click on the link, you can see she calls it “the Audacity of Taupe”! :stuck_out_tongue:

A little controversy now about the rug and its quotations: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/09/04/oval-office-rug-wrongly-attributes-quote-to-mlk/
