over 1 month of smobriety

ok–I was so sick from the flu a few weeks ago, I couldn’t even smoke. I’ve been a smoker for 24 years. I managed to get thru the physical withdrawal, just by being too sick to go out to smoke. (we vowed not to smoke inside the new house). And guess what!! I haven’t smoked since May 18–just wanted to share. I’m hoping Mr. HP will take a hint and stop, too. I never thought I could stop cold turkey. A life-threatening illness sure makes a difference!! I’m really excited–I’m getting my first grandbaby in about 3 weeks, and I won’t be stinking!! I’m still skinny as a rat, and I’m so glad!! Thanks for any support, you Dopers!:p:cool:

Congratulations!
I quit a 10-year habit after a bout of food poisoning in August 2004. Couldn’t smoke for three days, and that was enough to get me over the hump. Not a puff since.
Your grandchild will thank you. Keep it up!

YAY! Congrats!
I quit 1.5 years ago as of last week after smoking for 22 years. I don’t miss it at ALL!

That is GREAT! I was so happy when my in-laws quit. No more parties where we would come home stinking like the bottom of an ashtray. I used to hate exposing the kids to that. Besides, we’ve had more years with my husband’s folks than we would have if they had kept smoking. They both quit almost 15 years ago.

You’ll save some money, that’s for sure.

Congrats! I quit roughly 8 weeks ago (again - quitting’s easy, I’ve done it lots of times :p). I’m using the patch, and am on the last week of step 3. My sense of smell has come back! Which has its downside, since I’m now noticing that my workplace kind of stinks.

Congrats! I quit on 7th Jan this year, so almost 6 months exactly.

I smoked for 24 years. It’s still very weird, but I had a good long think the other day about having one, and decided I’m really over it.

Good luck!

Congratulations!

My mother quit by a similar method – pneumonia, in her case.

New house and new grandbaby are both wonderful smells; enjoy!

Congratulations!

I don’t know if you drink or not, but beware de booze! I’ve known quite a few people over the years who managed to quit for anywhere from a few months to a year but then went out to a club or bar and wound up smoking again. It seems that only one cigarette will be enough to do it. I quit smoking 25 years ago and was fortunate enough (after dozens of attempts) to give them up easily. But I always felt that I was only one puff away from being a smoker again, and I still feel that way. I’d love to try a cigar with some of my much beloved single-malt scotch, but I just won’t risk it for fear that it will lead me back to cigarettes…even after all this time.

Again, congratulations (and here’s hoping Mr. HP can kick 'em too)!

Congratulations! I quit when I had my appendix out. It does seem to make it easier to stop. I also quit drinking at the same time.

Onward and upward. And congrats on the new grandbaby !

I tried burning deadwood in my backyard this hour, whooooee the smoke from just a pizza sized blaze. that’s why I’m hiding inside now I would roll my own cigarettes while driving-at the same time- an eighteen wheeler. Man that was crazy- used to use the steering wheel as a rolling tool.
Loose tobacco taxed just as much now? That was 2.5 years ago.

All of you brave guys and girls that quit smoking, do yourself a favour and read Allan Carr’s book: The easy way to stop smoking". It is a two hour read, a ten dollar book (your library carries it for free) and it will make it so much easier to stay off cigarettes! The book will certainly help you if you have quit already, to stop permanently. Just look at the solid five-out-of-five star rating it gets on Amazon, and the glowing reviews from people whom the book helped to quit. Or just search the threads here on the Dope. The book is a classic.

But you have to read it, cover to cover; skimming it from an excerpt won’t do the trick.

Woohoo! I’m glad you quit (even though you had to go through being sick!)

Wishing you a lifetime of success!

My wife and I were just talking last week about how much better our realationship has become, and how much better I look since I quit. I smoked for 16 years, and finaly had enough of it, and quit cold turkey about a year ago. The cravings still come occasionally, like they do for everyone, but last a lot shorter when they do. You can make it!!

I recommend it to anyone who is even thinking about quitting. That book is how I quit, no doubt about it. I don’t know how it works, but it’s like frickin magic.

I’ve got that book, and his book about quitting drinking too.
