Overused Phrases in 2021?

This HuffPost article bemoans overused phrases. But many of them seem a decade old. “Wait, what?”, “new normal”, “no worries”, “supply chain”, “you’re on mute”… are any of these actually considered current?

What are sone better choices?

(Aside: I saw this in the New Threads list, and misread the title as “Overused Phases”. Next to an avatar showing a full moon.)

Can we be done with calling people Karens yet?

mmm

The second slot went to another misused and overused phrase: “No worries.”

Nominators said it’s dismissive.

“If I’m not worried, I don’t want anyone telling me not to worry,” one contributor said. “If I am upset, I want to discuss being upset.”

Wait, what? I’ve always (for decades) used ‘No worries’ as the same as ‘No problem’ or ‘De nada’. In other words, ‘You’re welcome. It was no trouble at all.’ I’ve never heard it as an instruction not to worry.

One phrase that I’ve hear more in 2021 than ever before is ‘game changer’. Everything is a game changer. Sick of hearing it.

I concur.

Yeah, I’ve never heard it as an instruction not to worry.

I have heard “you’re muted” more in the last two years than probably my entire life before 2020. But it’s not like it’s a catch phrase, it’s just that people forget to unmute before talking…

Yeah, this is what that phrase means, and I’ve been using it for decades as well. I have no idea what that article is talking about.

Heard in numerous YouTube vids when the VO pauses to collect his thoughts: “…so…yeah!” Never heard it in real life.

I nominate “At the end of the day . . .”

When all is said and done, a lot more gets said than done.

And at the end of the day, there remains a lot more heat than light.

Let’s go, Brandon

“…you’re another day older.”

I would like to never hear or read again “easy peasey”. It is so caviler and dismissive.

“In these troubled times…”
Can a phrase be a single word? Because I never want to hear “ivermectin” again.

“In this moment”
“Living my best life”
“Being my authentic self”

Circle back… circle around…

You do you.
An abundance of caution.

I hope for your sake that you’re not planning to be a veterinarian.

“Cancelled”, in response to any opposition to a person, place or thing.

Being “pumped” about something (as an expression of elation or excitement).

“Current” may also mean “back in common use.” “Supply Chain” and “You’re on Mute” are definitely overused currently.

You’re right about “Wait, what?” and “No worries” being quite old. “Wait, what?” are literally the last two words spoken in the Bob’s Burgers pilot - in early 2011. “No worries” was something Paul Hogan said in his earliest Australian tourism commercial (the one where he first uses, “We’ll throw a shrimp on the barbie for ya”).

Uh oh. I picked that one up from the Brits. I will try to unlearn it, but I also can’t say “no worries” so what do I say? “You got it!” sounds too much like a sycophant’s phrase.
