It seems like every time I cut my fingernails, I do something wrong, especially on my right thumb. For some reason I can’t get the shape right, and the nail grows in. Right now it’s macheteing* its way through the skin, and because the whorls of the thumbprint are in exactly the right direction to accommodate the fiercely incisive nail, the sore takes forever to heal. The bits of skin that should be together in order to heal are kept apart by the nail.
How can I speed the healing up? Should I bind up the tip of my thumb as tightly as possible, to force the skin together where it’s split?
Am I cutting my nails wrong? I was always taught to cut fingernails with a curve, and toenails straight.
*and yes, if you think you know why I used the word “macheteing” in this conext, you are probably right.
