I had all the above stuff going on above, plus severe headaches, ear pain, dizziness, muffled hearing, neck pain and sinus congestion. It didn’t just hurt when I was chewing or yawning, it hurt all the time. There wasn’t anything left in there to pop or crackle, all I could hear was a faint grinding sound.
I had surgery on April 1, 2003. I don’t have any of the above (hardly) at all anymore. I say “hardly” because I’ve still got a bit of healing to do, and sometimes I eat or chew something that I’m really not supposed to have yet.
The procedure I had done was a vertical ramus osteotomy. The short decription of what was done: The part of the lower mandible that angles up, right in front of the ear, was cut in half vertically. The rear portion closest to the ear could then drop down a fraction of an inch and knit back together with the mandible, leaving more room for the condyle to rotate.
I had all the crap going on in there, the displaced and degenerated disc and osteoarthritis, which was scraped off the bones before they sewed me back up.
The entire surgery was done through an incision inside my mouth, way back and along the lower teeth on the right side. I was wired shut for 7 weeks.
