Huh?? There’s no sales tax in Colorado?

No sales tax in Montana (which is where I used to live), which confuses certain visiting Coloradoans like BobotheOptimist. Lots of sales tax in Colorado and California, which confuses the hell out of me.

Something you should know about VTA County (which may or may not apply to you) – the cops are racist. We’re talking boondock Texas town racist. Let’s put it this way – the black population of VTA County is less than 2%, but in prison it’s over 50%. Figures, huh? Even if you’re white, if you look like a long-haired freak or like you just dropped out of continuation school, you’ll get hassled. (A standard pull-over question, in addition to “May I see your license?” and “Have you had anything to drink tonight?” is: “Have you ever been arrested?”)

I don’t think Latinos/Asians get harassed nearly as much…and if you dress like a rich white Republican, the cops won’t bother you at all.

That isn’t cool, even if I won’t ever be targeted. Hmmm . . . Monday immediately before lunch, I blatantly jaywalked downtown (didn’t dawn on me that it is illegal here) right beside a motorcycle cop – who merely glanced at me. Before I got out of earshot, a young man got cuffed and arrested for jaywalking (well, either for jaywalking or for being mouthy about it) right behind me. At the time, I assumed that the arrestee had been doing something else bad. Now I wonder if it was because I am a middle-aged, stuffy-looking white woman, but he was a young, scruffy-looking brown (latino?) male.
