"Ozone" lamps in old clothes dryers

Hamsters ate my post. Here it is:

You know that nice scent of your clothes when you hang them out to dry? My mother always told me it was because of ozone. (Now, if I’m wrong, don’t diss me - that’s what she said.)

Anyway, lately I’ve been doing a lot of handwashing of my clothes, and letting them dry on my balcony. Same scent - not that of the detergent, but that “dried outside” scent.

That all reminded me of something interesting I saw as a kid. My aunt had this clothes dryer with funky lamps in it. I asked what that big one was, and was told it was an ozone lamp, to infuse clothes with that outdoor scent. IIRC, the lamp was purple.

I have not seen a dryer like that since.

I’m not making this up. If they were BSing me, please let me know.

They were not BSing you.
