Pacific Rim Uprising (Open Spoilers)

It’s been a long 5 years, kids, but the sequel is FINALLY HERE! (Or at least it will be here in a day or two)

IF YOU DON’T WANT TO SEE ANY SPOILERS, DON’T READ ANY FURTHER!

or perhaps I should say…

TODAY…WE ARE CANCELLING THE SPOILER BOXES!

(I don’t personally know any spoilers, but I figured we should get that out of the way.)

Who else is super-duper excited for Pacific Rim Uprising?

From the previews and posters, it looks like the visuals will be amazing. It seems like there will be more scenes in daylight this time, which will make me very happy. I love all the callbacks to Gipsy Danger in the design and execution of Gipsy Avenger, and I hope there are more that we haven’t seen yet. I’m glad that Newt, Gottlieb, and Mako will be back. I’m a little iffy on John Boyega, having found him utterly charmless in the Star Wars movies, but I hope for the best. I still don’t really understand how they’re going to make it so the Kaiju come back, but I suppose I’ll find out soon enough.

Do I expect it to be as good as the original? Nope. Do I care? Nope! Bring on the Jaegers! Woot!

I join you in your rejoicing!

At last, a movie that isn’t about the unbearable angst of winning something for the Oscars!

We have a choice that is NOT a frisky rabbit!

Huzzah! Let us blow things up, level cities and destroy space monsters!!!

Ooh, are they from space this time? Or both times, and they just thought they were from the breach last time?

Speaking of Oscars, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve replied to someone who claims that Pacific Rim was too stupid for words with “but but but…it’s by Guillermo Del Toro!” Not that anybody was ever persuaded by that…

I’m watching Pacific Rim in preparation right now. Hannibal Chau just showed up. I don’t see Ron Perlman in the credits for Uprising. Bummer.

Have you seen the Honest Trailer for Pacific Rim? I’m not sure what it means that a video that’s making fun of the movie perfectly captures the spirit of the movie, but hey, it works. I highly recommend it as preparatory viewing.
ETA: Why the everloving heck does Stacker Pentecost have a moat in his office? I think it’s the things that make the least sense in this movie that make me love it the most.

Of course Pacific Rim was a stupid movie. So what? It did a very good job at being a stupid movie.

At one point in the movie, I realized that it was actually a 100-million-dollar-budget filming of the imaginations of a couple of third graders.

“Lets play Robots and Monsters!”
“Okay, I’m a giant monster, and you’re a robot, and I’m beating you up.”
“Oh yeah? Well, I pick up a GIANT TRUCK and SMASH YOU WITH IT!”
“Okay, then, well, I HAVE WINGS, and I FLY YOU INTO OUTER SPACE!”
“No you don’t! I have a GIANT SWORD, and I STAB YOU WITH IT!”
and so on.

Once I realized the underlying logic (i.e., none), I relaxed and enjoyed it thoroughly.

I have thought, though, that the concept would have worked better as a Saturday morning cartoon than as a movie.

I doubt it would dissuade me, but is there any chance someone can see the movie and post a quick spoiler-free review before we get right into spoiler territory?

I’d love to hear some thoughts on the movie without getting spoiled

I have to admit, though I love over-the-top stuff, bad movies, and great special effects, that I found Pacific Rim incredibly stupid. I know about the concept of turning your brain off and just watching the movie, but I just couldn’t with PR. I started watching it two or three times, but just had to give up.

I think LHoD captured it perfectly, and I loved the How it Should have Ended version. Now, after reading this thread, I gotta see the Honest Trailer version.

Didn’t you see the big red letters? Here, I’ll do it again.

THIS THREAD IS OPEN-SPOILER. IF YOU WANT TO REMAIN SPOILER-FREE, FIND ANOTHER THREAD.

To quote the Honest Trailer clip:

Either way, that’s pretty awesome.

Ok, here we go:

There are these giant monsters, right, and they are attacking cities and stuffs, and so the peoples make these giant human shaped robots with tons of giant guns and missles and all kinds of giant weapons like swords and stuff, and some of the giant robots do karate he-yaws, ok, and so the giant awesome robots fight the giant monsters and all kinds of cities are destroyed and hella-tons of peoples gets squished and dead and awesomeness ensues. And all the movie goers are happy.

Also the robots have names like Ocelot Codpiece.

The ones I am familiar with are: (warning: those with an * were live action and not cartoons)

Robotech
Voltron
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers*
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Mobile Suit Gundam
Transformers
Big O

And about 10 billion other Japanese animes.

You just know some nerd out there is sketching out design ideas for Ocelot Codpiece right now.

I can’t draw, dammit!

They didn’t go far enough the first time. It was good but it could have been better. For example, in this next one I want at least one jaeger that is controlled by a Dance Dance Revolution style floor mat, so the two pilots are dancing in unison. I can see an awesome training montage.

I thought the rift was to aliens. Help me. Was it rift to another dimension?

You know what? I don’t care interdimensional-space-time-aliens-from-hell.

LET’S GO! Blow them up.

And it shall be called… goes to random adj-nound generator at Random Adjective Noun Combination

“Pink Focus”

Autocrat Stargazer or GTFO.

Pink Focus is clearly a laser-based attack unit. I tried again and got Neighbouring Publication which is, obviously, a propaganda and misinformation - based attack unit.

Autocrat Stargazer is…?

Oh, darn–I thought this was a thread about Atlantic Rim: Resurrection.
