So we have to move our stuff from So-Cal to Washington at the end of the summer, and since we need to get the car up there ayway we thought we go this route instead of a u-haul (full service moving is not an option for us). We’ve been checking out a couple of companies that will drop a 28’ pup off, you get 48 hours or so to pack it up, then they drop it off at your destination and you unload it in 48 hours again.
On the consumer advocate type web sites they say not to accept estimates in feet rather than weight-- since we can pack things as efficiently as we are able to (and much of what we have is books-- small and very heavy) and the agreements note that if you use less footage, they charge less, and vice versa and we are in charge of the packing process, this rule doesn’t really apply, right?
Has anyone had any good/ bad/ indifferent experiences with this method?
I’ve done full-on Do It Yourself (DITY) moves in the past. It worked out fine for me, and I’m going to be doing one in the next two weeks or so. Keep in mind that I don’t have a whole lot of stuff to move.
Have you considered a ‘partial DITY’ move? Have the movers take your big obnoxious stuff like sofas and tables while you personally move your sensitive/valuable things? Again, that’s exactly what I’m doing. I’m taking my guns, TV, and computer with me. . .
Haj–we’re actually just stowing our stuff there and going to Belgium-- aiee!
Well, we want to do this so we don’t have to rent a truck and tow. The last time we used a U-Haul it was quite expensive for gas and generally just a pain and we’d rather drive with the parrot in our own lovely car and make leisurely stops in places like SF where the chance of fiding parking for a mo-ped is unlikely, much less a truck.
So few people have done this? Hmm. Thanks for the ideas-- maybe I’ll look into the truck and tow idea again.
