Packing sucks

Like has been said, isnt this specific move worth it? Oh well it does suck, and i’m glad my family has NEVER moved (yes, never, my parents bought the house in '73 I think). I’ve lived here all my life, so I dont know the horror that is called packing. But, that day will come. Fortunately I dont have too much stuff. Big things are my futon, dresser, and computer desk and chair. The rest are my small amout of clothing, and some books. But at least I can get my family to help me out.

Good luck on unpacking, Psy ;).

Or, you could try my approach. I just never unpack, in a big way.

For the garage I bought beefy 5ft high shelves. I had steel angle iron frames welded up to fit two of them bolted back to back, with swivel casters underneath. The whole unit has 4 shelves on each side, takes two standard plastic storage bins on each shelf, and fits through a standard 2 1/2 ft wide door with room to spare. That’s 16 storage bins per rolling unit. You can line them up on the wall with no walkways in between like books, and just pull out the one you need. Watch how much weight you put in them though, they can get hard to move (and stop!). I also scrounged a couple of old metal cabinets similar to kitchen cabinets and put them on wheels for my workbench. The sawhorses knock down, the parts washer is on casters, etc.

For my books I built a dozen plywood crates about 17"x17"x24". They stack in a variety of configurations to fit almost any space. I got fancy and worked them over with a belt sander before I painted them semigloss off white. I used shelf paper inside to prevent sticking to the paint. When it’s time to move, I just put all my books away and screw the lid onto each box. They are kinda heavy, but they fit nicely on a dolly and stack well. I carry them comfortably one at a time. I can build more when the library expands, and the effort helps make those tough pruning decisions happen.

For the bedroom I knocked together lighter weight plywood boxes, without the heavy 2x2 frames. I have barely enough self discipline to toss my clothes in them from the dryer. Come moving time, my clothes are already packed except for the hanging stuff.

In the office, I splurged on Metro racks. Nothing, but nothing, works so slick for stacking the various computers and assorted 'silly scopes & whatnot. I bent up 1/8"x1/2" metal hooks for cable trays. I used heavy plexiglass for the desk top. It all knocks down as painless as possible.

All I need to pack is the kitchen and of course the usual round of tossing. I am generous to Goodwill. All the crates and bins do add up to a fair investment, but once I figured out that I will continue to move every 1 1/2 to 2 years for the forseeable future I had to do it.

Good luck.
