Paging Doper Veterinarians

This is a solicitation for veterinary advice, which does not violate the board ban on medical advice AFAIK.

I have an 8 month old Boxer pup that has demodectic mange (confirmed by a vet)AND a food allergy. She looks like hell. We’ve just switched dog food types to alleviate the allergy portion of her skin problems.

We’ve been treating the demodex with Promeris on a monthly basis. It’ll knock down the mange and allow the fur to regrow for a while, then it will flare up again.

I have my wife convinced we need to quit the monthly Promeris and switch to Ivermectin which can be given on a shorter interval. FWIW, Ivermectin is available over the counter in North Carolina, so I’m not violating any laws or ethics doing so.

I can only find information on human grade Ivermectin. Is there a veterinary equivalent to a Physician’s Desk Reference where I can look up dosing information?

FWIW, I can give IM and SQ injections if necessary.

Ivermectin can be given orally, and for an extended period for treatment of demodectic mange. There is a formulation produced for cattle, a 1% solution, probably much cheaper than a human certified drug.

IANA vet, so I will not quote you a dose. I’d prefer you do this through your own vet, who should be accommodating. If not, I’m sure there are other vets.

This treatment was very successful for our doberman, whose demodex flared up whenever she was under stress (like after a hurricane).
