Years ago I bought one of those rasp and wick type repair kits and used it successfully. I now have a flat that I can fix in the same manner but I forget the specifics. I’ve located the rasp, the insertion tool, and the wicks. But do I need to soak the wick in rubber cement? Google tells me I do, but the wicks I have are still pretty darned gummy with their own indigeonous tar compound. I have a bottle of contact cement. Should I just go ahead and “dip my wick” anyway?
Tire shop owner here.
It doesn’t hurt to use rubber cement but if you do, do not use too much and let it dry completely before inserting in the hole. I use a hairdryer to speed things up
Also, unless the puncture is too small for the wick to fit in, don’t use the rasp at all. It widens the hole and makes the repair less reliable.
Keep in mind that those wicks are a temporary repair. You have to take it to a tire shop to inspect the inside of the sidewalls for damage and make a proper repair.
Thanks Dog. I already went ahead and did the deed. I opted out of the rubber cement since the wick seemed gummy enough. So, it’s in the garage seasoning as we speak. (I have the spare on the car.) I’m going to take a drive to the gas station and fill-er-up. Tomorrow morning I’ll see if it’s OK to put back on.
I need new tires in the next couple of months anyway. I’m hoping this will see me through until I have to cough up $600.
Thanks.
